Winter visits to this picturesque site usually produce plenty of interest both on the water and in the neighbouring countryside.

- January 6th - Mountsorrel Common and Castle Hill
It is some time since we visited this interesting site which is situated just to the west of the village. What was formerly a large hardrock quarry has been infilled and landscaped to recreate an area of elevated ground similar in shape to the former hill prior to its being quarried away. The abundant old thorns and ample fruit often attract good numbers of winter thrushes.
