My Dojo HAYES
Karate Club - Shotokan KUGB
Not one of the "top notch" Bees Knees places in the
southern hemisphere, but it is my dojo. The club was formed about 5 years
ago at Whiteheath school in Ruislip Middlesex UK and later a complimentary
club opened in Hayes, Middlesex at the Barnhill Community Centre. Our Sensei
is Ged Smith Shodan. He started his karate when he was 33 years old and
has been shodan for the past 10 years. As an instructor, I admire the way
in which he has time for everybody from 9th Kyu to Shodan. It has only
been in the past 4 months where he has seen his first Black Belt Karatekas
all the way through from complete beginner and it was obvious to anyone
who saw him, as to how important that was to him. Shireen, aged 13, was
the first. She managed to get a full grading on the day. Her brother Cameron,
aged 10½, and Carl, aged 13, were next. They passed their kumite
and basics without too much of a problem, because they were good. However,
their katas were not perfect. For the next grading, both passed with flying
colours.
Further to the above, in August 1997, our club
gained another two Dan grades, so congratulations to Louise PALEY and Hannah
HUNT aged 13yrs respectively. It was surprising that both girls got it
as they had partnered each other during the sparring and the Kumite.
Our training takes place on Mondays & Wednesdays
for the Ruislip based club, having lessons for the juniors between 1830-1930hrs
and the Seniors from 1945-2100hrs. The Hayes club meets on Tuesdays &
Fridays and only has a senior class between 1945-2100hrs.
Although we are not a well established club, our
membership and attendance, I think, is pretty high. We also host the Annual
Inter club competition for the area which brings the different students
together and allows you to meet other Senseis from clubs nearby who practice
the same style as yourselves.
