Straight during week, but every Saturday is Sundissential Night. Gay / Lesbian / Straight / Australian! - Anything goes. If you are a cyber kid, who likes the sound of banging hard house, then this is the club for you! If the rave is too much for you, then, you can go up stairs and chill in the 'funkissential room' which consists of Kylie, Madonna, Michael Jackson remixes etc. If you are the sort of person who likes a buzz, then chill into it in the 'funkissential room', then as you come up, go down to the rave and jump onto the podium to reach your euphoric state!

Everyone is extremely chatty so be prepared for people with verbal diahorea! There isn't really a dress code, but they ask you to make an effort. They will turn away 'Kevs', 'Sharons' etc, and sometimes can get  funny so it is best to shy away from jeans / trainers. Although, if you dress "normally", you will stick out like a sore thumb! girls, wear your knee boot covers and short skirts, boys, get some UV spray and get down 'Oasis' for some florescent clubbing gear! Might be an idea to spray your hair silver too! lol! Rubber spikes go down well and get yourself a dummy! Buy your glow sticks in there and dance till the early hours of the morning!

This is a real MUST HAVE experience! The guest DJ's will wow you with their talent to keep you high as a kite all night! There is a glass cube over the dance floor, which you can walk into off the balcony. Here you are dancing on a sheet of glass above the audience and in the lighting statements and air conditioning, you feel as though you are floating above the croud!

Don't worry about what people are thinking when you are on the dance floor coz they aren't thinking ANYTHING! They are just there for a good time! Everyone is SOO friendly and are very respectful. As big as the venue is, it feels almost as though it isn't big enough for the party (and I don't mean squashed in by that. Very spacious in-fact!). The DJ's can ALWAYS read the crowd and keep you sweating and screaming for more!

A FABULOUS night all in all, although, with the energy of the rave, be sure to drink plenty of water as you may dehydrate. Although don't over do it or you will wake up with a head ache. Just sip half a pint to a pint of water an hour. other than that. BRACE YOURSELF! This event ISN'T for amateurs!

Cabaret Bar and restaurant. small gay bar with dance floor and drag acts, stripper, karaoke etc, DJ most nights. Themed cocktails with kinky names.  All pints and bottles before 7:30pm=£1.50. wide variety of music on the play list, ranging from trance, hard house, happy hardcore, chart, gay anthems, old school. SOME drum and bass, but very little (as it's s****! lol!)

I love it here. I'm here whenever I have got the money really. Even if I don't have much money, I like to go and have a dance and a laugh. All the bar staff know me (mainly coz I get drunk and flirt!). When the DJ spots me going in he ALWAYS plays my song (True love never dies - flip and fill featuring kelly llorenna). Ben, Birmingham

Bar 38

Canal Street

Outdated and outnumbered This 3-floor bar was once one of the trend setting bars of Canal Street, with its modern and stylish décor, setting a high standard based on a suave, sophisticated look which today’s gay community seem to adore. Although it still retains its stylish streak, the bar feels somewhat dated now, and perhaps due to the lack of customers, it’s not one of the “must be at” bars any more. The food (provided on the top floor) is adequate, but nothing to scream and shout about. I guess it’s worth a look though, if only for the cool fountain downstairs. Oh yeah, and it’s also earned a reputation as bar thirty-straight for reasons I surely don’t need to spell out, for those of you that care! Rating: ** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Bar Med

Adequately amiable - This bar (just around the corner from Canal Street on Princess Street) screams out bright colours, which, at least in my mind, means it has something to live up to! To be fair, it’s not a bad place at all. It may not be totally gay, it may not be classed as unique, and it may not be the most beat-popping, heart-thumping, body-twistin bar you could go to, but it’s friendly and nice and just generally quite, well, cool! And the food is nice too! Rating: *** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Fab Café

Funky retro time-warp - Ok, so the fab café may not be one of those “gay” bars we all know and uh, love, but due to it’s amazingly funky atmosphere, with all-inclusive viewing of shows like Thunderbirds and Dr. Who, it’s just THE place to be if you’re up for something a little different. It’s also happily devoid of screaming queens and pushy poofs, and harbours some of the most scrumptious bar staff in Manchester. Go see for yourself! Rating: ***** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Gaia

46 Sackville Street

Inner city tranquillity - Right, Gaia. Very hard to categorise this one, because (like the fab café) it’s something quite different to the other run-of-the-mill bars in the gay village. It’s quite serious I suppose, definitely for chilling after one to many JDs than for pumping yourself up for a big night at essential. Lots of sitting down opportunity needless to say, which makes a refreshing change! Be warned however, it is over 21’s and although you’re likely to slip by on a Wednesday afternoon, have your fake id’s at the ready on a Saturday night! Rating: **** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Hollywood Show Bar

Bloom Street, M1 3LY

submit your review

Camp mega-scene - Now the Hollywood Showbar is going to be a tricky one to rate as it is likely to very strongly appeal to some, and equally will disgust others. It’s incredibly camp and loud and blessed with a whole heavenly host of drag queens in all their colours. It’s fun, lively and has a great atmosphere. Cynics would insult it as having all the negative gay attributes all thrown into one glory hole to fester. Decide for yourself! Rating: *** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Manhattan Show Bar

100 Bloom Street, M1 6HZ

submit your review

Camp mega-scene + hetero! - The sister bar to the Hollywood showbar, these two are really pretty much the same *gasp aaaaghh!* when it comes down to it, although this one doesn’t have the “gay only” door policy of Hollywood. So all your hetero friends can come in, and come out 10,000 times camper! Yeah, so that’s that really! Rating: *** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Manto

Cutting edge - One of the founding fathers of the gay village in Manchester, Manto is a great central bar with a nice friendly atmosphere. At present it is closed for renovation (we can only wonder!) but you can still enjoy the other members of the Manto group which started off because of this bar.

Metz

Canal Street, M1 3EZ

Pleasantly diverse - Bizarrely situated on the other side of the canal (look out for the little bridge!), Bar Metz makes a lovely addition to the gay village. It’s not pushy, it’s not camp, it’s not loud (well, not often!), it’s not bright and whizzy. It’s just lovely! The décor is distinctly affluent ethnic, mirrored only by Prague V (to an extent at least). It also boasts a canal barge to sit on during those lovely warm summer months with your friends. It’s just nice! The food is also scrummy, and like the décor, leans strongly to eastern European flavours. Top marks on every front here! Rating: ***** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

New Union

Scrub haven - My friends constantly nag me to go to the New Union on our frequent nights out. They say it’s the focus of the gay village. They say it’s attitude free. They say it’s loud, camp and fun. I say balderdash. The New Union is a great place to go and cruise for 16- boys and 65+ men, who between them have an IQ less than my shoe size and less style than Pat Butcher. At least she makes an effort with her makeup! Well anyway, yeah, it also offers karaoke on a Thursday for people who love disgracing themselves. It’s great if you’re into this kind of night apparently, I’m just not. Rating: * Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

New York

All talk? - Another bar of the Hollywood/Manhattan strain, New York is just as loud, camp and fun. Historically located in the centre of the village, the focus has now moved away from this area somewhat leaving it feeling slightly off the beaten track. But still, it’s well worth the crawl around the corner from the New Union, even if only to escape from that place! Fun and colourful, with more drag queens than you could shake a stick at. Prague V

Eastern flavour - I don’t know who was the consultant on interior design for this trendy bar, but I like what I see! A nice blend of industrial steel, wood, leather and generally all things chunky. It’s great! As for atmosphere and all that, Prague V is a nice place to enjoy some bangin pre-club beats at night, and opts for the more mellow feel during the day. It’s also blissfully cool in the summer, making it the perfect retreat after spending several thousand on Prada! It’s quite a mixed crowd, but I always feel a little of “what I can’t get my hands on” is quite refreshing on Canal Street. I like! Rating: **** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Rembrandt

33 Sackville Street (in the Gay Village), M1 3LZ

submit your review

Rubber ducky - A nice bit of sleaze on the corner, the Rembrandt is one of the “historical” pubs of the Village apparently. Pah! If old men, leather, rubber, skinheads, sleaze etc etc is your thing, great! It’s the place to be (if you’re not already at Sub101!). Otherwise, if you feel you have at least a margin of style, attitude, or whatever you’d like to call it, may I suggest somewhere else? Rating: * Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Slug and Lettuce

Canal Street

Bland trend - Nothing very special here I’m afraid. Yes, the furniture is nice, the floor is lovely too. But the bar staff are a bit up themselves. And it’s also probably the most gay-unfriendly bar of the gay village, if that makes sense. Well, it’s ok for a quick one (if you’re prepared to fork out for your pint) but hardly the place you’d like to spend any time. Rating: ** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Spirit

Canal Street

No Website

submit your review

Pure enjoyment - One of the hallmarks of the Village, Spirit has it all. It’s a great place to impress first-timers, with it’s lovely smooth look with a hint of 70’s retro in places. During the day it’s nice and quiet, and has a very pleasant atmosphere. In the evenings things get a bit busier and louder, thanks to the DJ that’s resident most nights. Ok, so the music could be better – it does try to be more hardcore than it can handle sometimes. But still, that’s just a minor quibble. What makes this place extra special is the fantastic beer garden on the roof, with lovely views. You can even enjoy it in the cooler months now thanks to the heaters they’ve put up there! They also do a range of food, all of which is delicious. A great nice out! Rating: ***** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Thompson’s Arms

Sackville Street

Not one for the kiddies! - I don’t like this place. Like the Union, it has that level of sleaze that just tips over my tolerance from being mildly flattered to just plain scared. Lots of older clientele, which means it does seem to scare off the young studenty types. Like me that is! But is often worth a look-see, go on, surprise yourself! Rating: ** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

Tribeca

Chilling, not thrilling - This place is just plain nice. It’s a totally non-threatening atmosphere, with lovely interior design (lots of copper!) and really is just a great place to unwind. You can even enjoy views of that lovely little park! How quaint. What’s probably one of the nicest things about this place is that there is quite a remarkable age range and nice distribution across it. And because being the place it is (and also as it’s quite mixed) people don’t seem to go looking for one thing so much. Like a shag. Or a fight. That’s so refreshing! Rating: **** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk

A little bit of that - Apart from being a little scared of lighting up in this place (you feel it could burn to the ground in less than five minutes!) it’s just great. There really is something in here to please everyone. There’s the window seats to watch the pretty people walk past. There’s the tasty barmen, no, VERY tasty barmen! There’s a disco style dancefloor downstairs. There’s a lovely restaurant with yummy food. And there’s a minstrel’s gallery (no, not the chocolate) from which to cruise, if that tickles your todger. All in all a really superb place! No quibbles here! Rating: ***** Joe, Manchester, www.stardotboy.tk
