The mission of Lichfield Cathedral is to worship God and to work for His Kingdom
Visit Lichfield Cathedral
For 1300 years, Lichfield Cathedral has stood at the centre of a community of Christian faith, called to witness to God and his love for the world. We believe that God calls us, and all Christians, to draw the world into fullness of life through belief in God, walking the way of love after the pattern of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. So the Cathedral Community, in partnership with the Diocese of Lichfield and our overseas links, pursues the primary purposes of worship and prayer, evangelism and outreach, justice and care, and teaching and nurture.
The Cathedral Community Aims
- to maintain the highest standards in the daily worship of God
- to be a centre of prayer, pilgrimage, peace, nurture, celebration, service and wonder
- to nourish the worshipping community in the Christian faith, and in its communal life
- to develop the Cathedral as a centre for the expression of God’s gifts of creativity
- to provide a ministry of welcome to all who visit the Cathedral, and exploit its potential to reach out to those with faith and those without
- to engage critically with the issues of our age and to promote a Christian perspective
- to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ, through the congregation, to the wider world
- to be a centre for the development of the Christian mind through study, teaching and the provision of learning opportunities for all ages: to encourage young people to visit the Cathedral and help them to be open to its history and purpose
- to be a centre of musical excellence for the Church and the community
- to provide a focus for the life of the Diocese and the ministry of the Bishop: to work, wherever possible, with Christians of other traditions: to develop our overseas links
- to care for and enhance the fabric of the Cathedral and the Close: to administer the Cathedral’s life with cheerful efficiency and integrity: to achieve and manage the necessary resources in the most efficient and cost effective manner
In brief: We worship God, we support the Faithful, we serve the community and the wider world.
