Shandardel Cocker Spaniels

Puppies

I spend a considerable amount of time ensuring that my litters are well socialised and have every opportunity to experience new things whilst with me. From the age of 4 weeks I start getting them used to different noises and this has been made easier since I acquired the "Sounds Sociable" programme which was developed by Sarah Heath and Jon Bowen, both internationally renowned veterinary surgeons who exclusively treat pets with behavioural problems. The programme consists of a CD with 37 tracks of various everyday noises e.g. door bells, baby crying, telephones, and so on, and a useful manual which gives excellent guidance to both breeders and new puppy owners. Sound is significant as it warns animals of an approaching threat and sudden noises often startle puppies and sound phobias can develop in adult dogs. I believe the extra effort involved in socialising my litters is worthwhile, especially as it can help prevent later behavioural problems which can occur in nervous, fearful dogs.

My booklet "Growing Good Puppies" gives advice on how to avoid common behavioural problems and all new owners receive a copy along with a socialisation programme. All puppies are wormed according to veterinary guidelines, are sold KC registered, with a five generation pedigree, 6 weeks free insurance, puppy packs, and I offer help and advice for as long as necessary. I am grateful that the majority of my puppy owners do find the time to report back to me and a lot do make the effort to bring the puppies back when they are fully grown which is really nice.
