Neither words nor music... neither night nor day-
For that poor little boy that I’ll never forget.
Why are you smiling? You don’t say!

If the sun is shining brightly, you reach out a hand to catch a ray;
When it goes behind a cloud, you cry out your regret!
Neither words nor music... neither night nor day!

Your hands twist and turn in the sunlight as you play-
You’d only see a blur, behind such thick glasses; yet-
Why are you smiling? You don’t say!

With your hearing aid, if a sound’s really loud, you seem to pay-
Attention. If a scream’s not loud enough, it goes by, unmet!
Neither words nor music... neither night nor day!

Your poor mother! Did no-one hear her pray-
The day she caught rubella? And yet,
Why are you smiling? You don’t say!

She shouts your name out loudly. You turn her way.
She stands at the window in silhouette-
Neither words nor music... neither night nor day.
Why are you smiling? You don’t say!

I met that little boy and his parents for just a few days, over 30 yrs. ago.  He left a lasting impression on me, as you can see.
