Set up in 1989 as the Edinburgh Television Trust to provide education and training in access to television broadcasting. In 2000 its name changed to the Television Trust for Scotland before being absorbed into The Broadcasting Trust in late 2003.

The Broadcasting Trust seeks to develop wider participation and access to broadcasting - especially television and radio.

The Trust's archive continues to be administered and distributed by the Institute of Local Television.

From within the archive three particular strands of programming are currently being developed to offer programming for audiences and community broadcasters world-wide.
