Help the Sound of Mull Archaeological Project (SOMAP) continue their work to establish baseline monitoring data on the popular wreck of the 19th Century steamer SS Thesis.

SOMAP - Annual fieldschool
21st-28th July 2001

Join us for the eighth annual SOMAP fieldschool. Put your pool skills to good use on 19th Century shipwrecks in the Sound of Mull. Find out about the work of professional archaeologist on 17th Century wrecks in the Sound.

ScapaMAP:  the Scapa Flow Maritime Archaeology Project
(5th-10th August 2001)



Help record the wrecks of ScapaFlow as part of the SCAPAMAP project in association with NAS Scotland and Heriot-Watt University.

ScapaMAP, a research project based in the Department of Civil and Offshore Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, promotes the better management of the archaeological and historical heritage resources submerged in Scapa Flow for the benefit of present and future generations.  The project is supported by Historic Scotland and the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

NAS Part III Conservation Course
National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh
Saturday, 10th March 2001 (£50)

Provisional timetable and objectives:

0900               Welcome, registration, and paperwork (Philip Robertson, NAS)

0915               Finds handling, finds storage, and the role of the archaeologist in the
                       conservation process (Dr Colin Martin, and Dr Paula Martin, School of
                       History, St Andrews University)

1015               Coffee

1030               Conservation of artifacts from marine sites -basic principles (Theo Skinner,
                       National Museums of Scotland)

1115               Tricks of the trade - new approaches to conservation (Barry Kaye, Sheffield University)

1200               Lunch (not provided)

1330               Guided tour around the Granton laboratories with opportunities to look at
                       artifacts currently undergoing conservation from the 17th Century
                       shipwreck of the Swan, Duart Point

1430               Travel by own transport to National Museums of Scotland, Chamber Street for informal look around museum.

1600               Debrief -Course ends.
