The Use of Fibre Optics in Internet Technology
prepared by Chris Rolstone
The internet began life as a system which enabled mainframe computers to exchange data using a telephone connection. Its original purpose was to enable scientists to collaborate on research. But it quickly became popular as a communications link with non-scientists as well and today the internet covers the globe. It is fair to say that most of us are unfamiliar with the actual technicalities of communicating via the Internet. The answer lies in the use of fibre optics - tiny strands of glass. Millions and millions of these fibres are connected together. Each strand of fibre can process up to 60,000 pieces of information per second!! But how does it happen? This web page will hopefully help you understand the basics of fibre optics and how they are used in this environment.

Autism and Asperger Syndrome
prepared by Lois Ann Morris
This web page starts with an overview of Autism and Asperger Syndrome, followed by an examination of what makes one different from the other. Difficulties at school are considered as well as successful techniques to help teachers cope with the educational challenge represented by an autistic or Asperger Syndrome student. An informal survey reveals the extent of assessment by UK Health Authorities of the incidence of autism in their areas. Finally, a clever parody of 'normal' people by an Asperger Syndrome webmaster, belies the accepted theory that autistic and Asperger Syndrome people are unable to understand humour.

The Use of Animals in Medical Research
prepared by Vicky Adamson
This web page has been designed to explore the controversy surrounding the use of animals in medical research. It begins by determining whether animals feel pain the same way that humans do, and uncovers the viewpoints of both pro and anti vivisectionists into the usefulness of animals in medical research. Insight into the appalling way animals are treated in the name of medical science is followed by alternatives to reduce, replace and refine animal experimentation.
