Lucy Cartledge’s musical education started at the age of twelve and during school days she attended the Kent Junior Music School and played for the Kent County Youth Orchestra.

From 1973-1977 she attended The Royal College of Music, in London, where she obtained both the Performers and Teachers ARCM diplomas.

Whilst there Lucy studied flute and piccolo with John Francis, piano with Harry Platts, improvisation, aural, history, harmony and choral work. Orchestral experience included opportunities to play both flute and piccolo in all the chamber, symphony, light and opera orchestras, under many conductors including Norman Del Mar and Sir David Wilcocks, as well as the honour of playing principal flute for the guest conductors Lorin Maazel and Vernon Handley. She gained experience playing in many ensembles, avant-garde, improvisatory and electronic groups and gave many concerts with all the above mentioned including a presentation to Gordon Jacob on his eightieth birthday.

She also studied at The International Summer School for several consecutive years, playing for classes with William Bennett, Trevor Wye, Geoffrey Gilbert and Peter-Lukas Graf and at Stowe Summer School in 1975, playing for classes given by James Galway.
