The Lochluichart Slipover is an "Allover Fair Isle" v-neck jersey. Fair Isle is an island lying between Shetland and Orkney and is famous for it brightly coloured knitted patterns. Why the people of Fair Isle started knitting in this manner is very debatable. One theory is that they were influenced by Spanish sailors wrecked from an Armada ship. There are similar patterns to be found in Spain. Another theory is that the patterns were of Scandinavian origin. I have my own theory why these patterns developed and I may as well tell you while you wait for the picture to appear. If you are knitting a plain garment it is very important that all the wool you use has been dyed in the same batch otherwise you get "shading" where the slightly different colours meet. Now if you ever go to the Shetlands you will notice that the sheep are various colours, not just white as you get elsewhere. You get black (dark brown), moorit (light brown). grey and mixtures. I think therefore that they started knitting patterns because they did not have enough wool of one colour to make a garment. That's just my theory the Armada story is more romantic.
