THE FELT MAKING PROCESS

All of my felt is hand made from Merino wool fibres.
The Merino is a breed of sheep primarily reared in Australia, and its fleece is excellent for felting. All felt makers make their felt in a slightly different way, the process which I use has been refined to ensure that my products are of the highest quality.

Felt making equipment

The process is as follows:-

1,

"Card" the fleece using either hand held carders, or the less time consuming drum-carder to separate the fibres.

2.

Lay four layers of the carded fleece on top of some bubble wrap.

3.

Dampen the fibres with a water/soap mixture.

4.

Press the surface of the felt gently to start the felting process

5.

The whole piece is then rolled inside the bubble-wrap at least 1000 times.

6.

Submerge the felt in very hot water, then in cold water, again rolling in between.

7.

Wash the felt in a wool cycle in the washing machine.

8.

Leave to dry.

This process ensures that each piece of felt, and therefore the product, is unique!
