Why use the bloated e-mail programs
provided by M$ and AOL-Time-Warner there are many other
excellent programs which do a better job and do not use up so
much of your hard drive.
One of the best around at the moment is `The
Batī this weighs in at 1.4M
and has more features than you will ever need.
But if you do not need the powerful network features of `The
Batī, there are several very good free programs, one I have
recently reviewed is FoxMail
2.1
Amazingly this program is only
800K (zipped) and has all the features of Eudora Pro which is
7M.
Download from this site using the above link, or check for the
latest version by clicking the icon;
Remember that most viruses, are written for the most common
e-mail clients made by M$ and Qualcomm Eudora, the latest
viruses activate just by reading the mail in preview. If you
use Eudora or Calypso make sure you do not use the M$ viewer
option.
Mail Warrior is a freeware program, check http://www.softseek.com
for the latest version.
There are many alternative programs which take up very
little space, and in most cases have more features than their
M$ counterparts, the best and smallest browser is Opera
currently in version 5.02 it is available from
http://www.opera.com
as well as many magazine CDīs
Also now available for Linux in
version 4.0 6 Beta, the latest version does not have the
evaluation box at start up and like it's Windows counterpart
is now Adware.
From this site you can download an alternate PIM, Task
Manager which provides a
calendar which includes international holidays, and allows you
to set appointments or tasks with a built in alarm
EditPad
is the best notepad I have seen with options to save in
traditional Text or HTML. If you need something a bit more
sophisticated try CWordPad
ideal for all your letters
and general documentation.
All this software is Freeware, apart from Opera which is a
modest $35 or free with adverts. Opera claims that the ads are
downloaded to a cache only once a week and do not interfere
with browsing.
