Campaign Against Sewage in the Sea at Sunderland

CASSS is a local organisation formed by the people of Sunderland, Seaham, and the North East Region to fight the proposals by Northumbrian Water Ltd. (NWL) to provide only Primary Sewage Treatment Works at Hendon and its seven other major sea outfalls in the NE Region.

The Committee of CASSS includes people with expert knowledge of our coastal waters; sea anglers, boatmen, divers, canoeists, surfers, and environmentally informed biologists and scientists, together with concerned citizens of the newest city in the UK.

CASSS is demanding primary, secondary, and tertiary sewage treatment with disinfection of the final effluent before discharge into our coastal waters, and an Interceptor Sewer System with a 1 in 25 storm event consent to discharge.

Our campaign has won the backing of the Northern Group MPs and MEPs, special mention must be made of Chris Mullin MP, Bill Etherington MP, John Cummings MP, and Alan Donnelly MEP.

Some Local and County Councillors in Durham and Northumbria have protested against NWL's unacceptable treatment levels and support the case CASSS has made.
