Lots of things make me titter, I can tell you. I came upon the Goon Shows fairly early in life : my Mom listened to the Goon Shows live in the post-War period and she tells me she used to try and remember the “plots” each Sunday night in order to do a live rendition - with voices of Minnie, Eccles, Morinarty, Grytpype et al - in the playground at school the next day, as many of her school friends wanted to hear the jokes, but had no radios... In any case I distinctly remember, at about age 10, when the Goon Shows were repeated on the radio and my Mom and I listened to some : and I clearly recall one occasion, which I have since found out comes from “The Sinking of Westminster Pier” and re-broadcast on 22nd August 1970, where the following exchange took place...

Eccles : “Hello... I’m the Famous Eccles !”

Grytpype-Thynne : “The Famous Eccles ? Never heard of you !”

Eccles : “You ever heard of Clapham Junction ?”

Grytpype-Thynne : “yes...”

Eccles : “Well, you mind what you say...”

My Mom giggled at this point, and I said “that doesn’t make any sense.” My Mom explained that that wasn’t the point at all, it wasn’t supposed to make sense : but was it funny ? ...and she was right ! I soon got the hang of dat ! So I grew up with Minnie and Henry losing their specatacles, Bluebottle being deaded and Little Jim pointing out when people have pallen in the water. It made me the man I am today folks !

After the Goons, I found a welcome home with Monty Python’s Flying Circus and all the spin-offs thereof ; Fawlty Towers, Ripping Yarns, the Secret Policeman’s Balls : and everyone who followed in Ned of Wales’ footprints, right the way up to Vic & Bob, Shooting Stars and The League of Gentlemen... but it was Milligan who started it all, and it’s his fault I’m the way I am today.

God bless him.

I’ll try and put a Goon Show line of the month up here if I remember. Owwwww !

Did you hear the man who got a job circumcising elephants at Dudley Zoo ?

The pay wasn’t very good, but the tips were enormous.
