Drawing on traditional songs for inspiration, A Rival Heart gives life to tragic historical moments, such as the death of King Henry VIII's third wife in "The Death of Queen Jane", or the painful reminiscences of a maiden whose lover fell in the Napoleonic campaigns ("Bonnie Light Horseman"). There is a spirited love quest in "A Rival Heart" and the poignant, life-affirming farewell of the closing song "The Parting Glass". Interwoven with the songs is a wonderfully orchestrated series of melodies drawn from the tradition of Irish dance music, from the blind harper O'Carolan through to Mark's own mellifluous flute composition "The Departure".

Mark has chosen a very fine group of session musicians to accompany him on this recording, including Billy McComiskey (accordion), Jim Eagan (fiddle), Dave Abe (fiddle), Eliot Grasso (uillean pipes and low whistle), Andy Thurston (guitar and tiple), Zan McLeod (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin) and Myron Bretholz (bodhran). Mark makes a guest appearance on Jim Eagan's superb new compilation of Ed Reavy tunes, At Reavy's House

This CD has something special for everyone, a unique and rich blend of Mark's formative musical influences in Ireland, Britain and America. And it's a winning combination...

Winsome debut album... Hot Press

...unique and exciting music that will undoubtedly enjoy very wide appeal. Mark here shows his versatility with an exquisite inaugural performance of songs from Britain and Ireland. His masterful renditions have a distinctive lyrical grace; they are rich and powerful, vivid yet subtle, with gorgeous detail in the arrangements. His skill is equally apparent in the sets of dance tunes where he finds that elusive balance, retaining the essential character of the Irish traditional music while adding exciting and original accompaniments. Both the songs and tune sets at times recall Planxty's near-orchestral sound, with string and melody instruments beautifully interwoven in a powerful ensemble. Billy McComiskey

...a well-modulated voice, with a good range and fine clarity of enunciation. Mark's arrangements are strikingly different... enough to bring a freshness which makes the listener pay more attention and rediscover the stories behind the melodies. A particularly fine example of this is the title track, which is a reworking of the older A Rival Hath Stolen my True Love Away...
...a rattling good selection of tune sets interspersed with the songs, all of the high standard that you would expect from these musicians. All in all, a finely-crafted and sensitively-balanced recording, which is worth looking out for.
