The Centres
In
January 1995 the Kanigiri Centre was opened to care for 35 disabled children.
It has since been developed to accommodate 78 children – all boys.
The Ongole Centre, opened in January 2001, can accommodate 100 girls. The
children come from extremely poor and remote villages.
Because they are physically disabled and often cannot walk at all,
the only option for many would be to stay in their homes all day while
their parents go out to work in the fields.
The extreme poverty of their small communities means that their needs
cannot normally be met in their villages.
The purpose-built centres at Kanigiri and Ongole provide the children
with all they need. During term-time the children live at the centres where we enable them to: ·
attend school for the
first time in their life. ·
receive full medical
care, including surgical operations (which can make the difference between
crawling and walking) and daily physiotherapy. ·
have good nutritious
food and new clothes. ·
train in local skills
to help them gain future employment. ·
receive extra tuition
to help them pass the exams which may lead to a college or university
education and a good career.
