After leaving Swansea (South
Wales, UK) at 19,
I was lucky enough to attend University College
of Los Angeles (UCLA). At this point
in my life I never had any
intention of becoming a golf
professional.
My aim was to become a fully qualified
fitness trainer and originally only went out for
a three month course.
When I discovered the
opportunities available at UCLA, I decided to
study all the "ologies"
in connection with
body and mind. The
classes included human physiology
and biology, health and fitness, body
building techniques, nutrition
and massage. The
three I found most important
were human psychology, bio mechanics and
psychoneuroimmunology (how the brain reacts to
movement).
In the early days, I had a
golf handicap of nine.
However, through my studies, I
was able to apply some
of the techniques
I'd learnt, and soon my golf swing
improved fast. After
just one year, my technique had improved to such
an extent, I was given the accolade of
most improved golfer in
Southern California.
From that point on I never looked back and knew
I wanted to teach people how to play our
beautiful game.
After America I returned to
the UK where in 1997 I joined Cams Hall
Estate Golf Club in Fareham
working under the
massively experienced Jason Neve.
Jason was brought into the golfing world
by John Sterling
(Captain of the PGA.)
I spent five happy years learning my trade from
Jason, through which I gained
a good reputation as a teaching golf pro.
After Fareham, I moved
to a driving range in Sunbury
and then back to
the beautiful New
Forest at Bramshaw Golf
Club as Assistant Pro.
However, my break came when I was
asked to become Head
Golf
Professional at
Portsmouth golf course.
There I spent three
years learning more about the management side of
golf.
In 2007, I moved to
Buckinghamshire. Here
I work for the highly experienced Matthew
Barr. He brought me in as his
Head Assistant at Gerrards
Cross Golf
Club.
The members here have been
massively supportive.
I hope
to see you soon for lessons
and look forward to greeting you to our
friendly golf club.
