Planning the journey

First, consult a good selection of travel books.

Read carefully to make sure your destination can cater for your needs. (Take into account that ruff guides are primarily intended for dogs – despite their poor literacy levels and general uncouthness – and have an unhealthy emphasis on trees, lamp-posts and bottoms.)

Packing

Essentials items for the travelling cat:

  • Pet passport
  • Flea repellent
  • Dog repellent
  • Bowls (x2 at least)
  • Sachets of cat food
  • Emergency biscuits
  • Blanket
  • Catnip
  • Basket (if travel conditions permit)
  • Vaccination certificate
  • Brush and curry comb
  • Emergency litter pack
Phrase books are neither necessary nor desirable – everyone understands and, in the more civilised countries, obeys "miaow".
