Concerto Moon - Rain Forest (Euro lmp 00)
Take 75 minutes of music, 5 young guys from Japan, Drums, Bass, Keyboards and Guitars, place in pot, cook for a short while and turn out. Then the end result should be Concerto Moon, a power metal outfit. There's very little if any time here for let up on this disc. I felt like I'd been on a fast journey through the history of heavy metal. Most of the tracks have a similar look and sound within the tried and tested metal formula. There are a couple of instrumental tracks for those of you who love your power guitar. Title track Rain forest, is one of the instrumental tracks which does take the pace down slightly but as soon as that track is over, Unstill Night kicks back at you. Live on the Memory takes things in a more progressive metal direction. There is a lot of movement around the progressive/power metal field here without moving too far away from the sound I'm sure Concerto Moon set out to make. For any band from Japan to break into a world market has always been a tough thing to do and for the few who have, only a limited amount of global success has been found. So if Concerto Moon are to do so, I feel they will need to offer more than what is on this disc. Although a professionally played and produced CD, CM are always going to be very much "up against it " in a room full of metal bands, which gets busier by the day.
In the summer of the mushroom honey - s/t (US aether 99)
Here's another trance educing hypnotic sound from US psychedelic label Aether. This again is crossing over influences of the last 30 years or more. ITSOTMH are more of a musical collective than a straightforward band. In total there are 10 musicians on here. The vocals, although sparse at times come from Richelle Toombs (Tombstone Valentine). Other members include Label owner Stan Denski on Guitar, joined by members of Tombstone Valentine, Many Bright Things and Faraday Cage. The music is for old and new hippies alike (me included), 72 minutes worth of music that weaves around looking at one direction, then takes off to find another. This CD is inspirational, experimental, psychedelic progressive krautrock (can there be such a thing?), rhythmic drums, drone and fuzz guitars, along with acoustic passages, fill the disc. It's not hard to work out where ITSOTMH wants to go with this, it's the way they do it that make it all so appealing. I find bands that set out to recreate a feeling or sound doesn't work, with more emphasis being placed on what sound they want to make rather than the sound they do make. Here ITSOTMH have put their energy into the music, and let the end result speak for itself. Long and shorter tracks mix well together while the long tracks let you drift along, the shorter tracks draw you in, and then let you out again. It's hard to pull tracks from this, but maybe the long and capturing Opening Impression of the Middle East, or the 3-minute acoustic Clouds on Sunday stand slightly heads above the crowd. The inside sleeve quotes " Psychedelic music for the new millennium". How could anyone disagree with this?
Existence - Small people, Short Stoires Little Crime (Ca bp 00)
It's not very often that on first listen to anything it goes over my head, but this one lost me. I couldn't get to grips with it. Then again it was 2-30 in the morning and I couldn't sleep. Now on second, third and forth listen I'm finally starting to get my head round all thats going on. Firstly the most striking thing to this cd is the inner book that came with it. Its only 56 pages long!! Imagine a TV guide and you get the idea of where the books at. The music, is very much sorting the men from the boys when it comes to new progressive intense rock land. Lots and lots going on, a full concept piece that follows the story of life as it travels around. From the start we get Therapy (Pt1) spoken words telling you "There's not much I can do to help you enjoy life", follow this with a one minute drum solo. What follows this is over an hours worth of music from this Canadian band. Beauty Teen is a rocker, very much fixed into the 70's sound of Rock 'n' Roll and I liked the inter-working of the French spoken female vocals. No Hero and The Journey still have this 70's sound in them, not making things sound dated just drawing from days gone by. The next track is the main stay of the CD In the Kingdom of Madness. This is a progressive rock fans utopia, everything from piano to guitars to strong vocals and complex arrangements. Split into 6 sections, the instrumental opening of Dripping clouds impressed me, if only for the violin work. Through to the dangerous sound of Darkness which sees the hero of this story entering a world he'd sooner not know. The feel of the music continues, using the guitar and violin interplay to spark the feeling going on inside this track. Section 4, Delirium, goes into a somber mood of piano again before picking on an avant-garde classic feel. Section 5 and for me the most important of this suite is Open letter To My Friends, another piano led piece which would have fitted on to the end of Pink Floyd's The Wall without effort. The pain and despair of our hero is now showing. Now entering into the final section, Farewell From a Lone Poet, no one is left with out any doubt where this has finally come to. Drained by the pervious 23 minutes we get Whispers (part 1V) I'm unsure if this is an end to Madness or not, but fitted well, a subdued instrumental piece that gives you time to recharge a little before the final 20 minutes of music. Business as Usual is very fitting, back again to the straight forward progressive touches of the opening tracks, leaving behind the epic you had just listen to. Flowers won't Do, Another Fine Day Of... and Overtime finish the CD off and fit again into Existences' prog sound. This 5 piece from Quebec have given a blistering performance here. From the mini masterpiece progressive opera of Madness, the rest of the CD is held up with some fine guitar work The use of what some might see as more unusual instruments is also another interesting side to this band. This has been a long review to write, maybe even longer in the thinking after the thought provoking music and I'd just listen to it for the fifth time!!. Progressive rock fans are going to love this. I didn't think on first listen I was ever going to reach the end of it, let alone understand it. But now I do, I think!! Your attention should be drawn to Existence, a first class CD and a tough one for anybody to try and follow. The last track on the disc, is the spoken one line of Therapy (Pt 2), asking "ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ?", you can work that out for yourselves.
Edhels Universal - s/t (Fr demo Cdr 00)
This band appears to be a by-product of mother band "Edhels" as I'm unfamiliar with either maybe I should just run now on this one. Here we have a 10-track demo CD, 5 live, 5 studio demos. The first three tracks are all studio recordings neo-progressive rock. Tenera Lupa, Martha (a 3 minute version, where the live version runs for 10 minutes plus) and Per dirt, a 6-minute piano based ballad sung in French. The next two tracks are both recorded live and show how the band sound when doing what I'm sure they do best, entertaining their fans. The marked contrast in styles is almost shocking for the mellow Per Dirt; the live No message/Sophie's legs enters a land of twisted guitars and strong almost attacking vocals. I Messaggerl again move styles to a rhythmic French vocal number but still with some excellent back work on the guitars. The 10-minute live version of Martha is probably the stand out track on the disc. It is complex by nature and builds over the softer passages. Egyptians matter (fast a furious jazz tones here), and Mad wedding (even faster and more furious jazz/prog) finish the disc off. For a demo CD I found this a more than adequate offering, hints of early 80's UK prog scene fill the more progressive moments while the rest of the CD is drawn from a host of other influences (the Jazzier side of Zappa and Crimson in particular), I'm not sure if you can buy this demo from the band, but if you like jazzier prog, it's worth asking about, as there will be something on here to make you want to dance.
Ivory Tower - Beyond the starts (Euro LMP 00)
I'm no great metal head, so with the more expanded progressive metal sound that German band Ivory Tower have to offer, I find I can get along with this CD. Over an hour's worth of music fills this disc, a mix of pounding beats with symphonic sections worked in, Ivory Tower takes their music seriously. The use of long and shorter tracks gives the listener plenty of scope, and as with most of the progressive metal bands around, the wide use of keyboards adds that fuller dimension to the sound. I can recall reviewing their first CD a while ago and I remember thinking to myself this band have the ability to stand out from the crowd. So with this CD Ivory Tower have moved forwards, they're playing and song writing has grown up. Now with the right exposure to the masses Ivory Tower are now ready for a full assault on the metal buying public. Tracks like the final Treehouse is an epic by any standards, and the 7-minute title track enters into speed metal with heavy riffing guitars. Tracks also worth mentioning are Peeping Tom, the opener Silence, and Game of Life. Anyone who has to glance over their shoulder every time a guitar riff hits the radio, give Ivory Tower the chance to show you just what they can do.
BELA - Til Summer Ends (US Mother West records 00)
Second on this weeks list from Mother West is the enigmatically named Bela. They welcome us into a dark and atmospheric world that is heavy with moody ambience. A lot of the songs are underpinned with a cello and this is lends an almost Eastern European feel to the tunes. Combine that with the eerie tones of the horror show favourite, the Theremin and you have a very distinctive sound. Surf rhythms and the overall dark feel give a Jesus and Mary chain sound to the proceedings, albeit with U.S. vox and a much healthier complexion. Melancholic pop for those darker moments.(CB)
CLAUDINE 3 - Cheater ( US private 00)
US Fem-vox rock with a big dollop of funky rhythms. Definitely in the alt rock section with lots of attitude. Track 5, 'Sometimes 1 Is More Than 2', is a particularly good rocker with the vocal duties being shared and a real old fashioned punk attitude. I think we may be hearing a lot more of this lot, they've got the backing of the same management company as Counting Crows and K.D. Lang and are well and truly up for it. The Press release says it better than I can so, to plagiarise : 'Claudine 3-Sexy, Sweaty, chick rock for public consumption' (CB)
The DAVENPORTS - Speaking of the…. (US Mother West Records 00)
Hot of the presses of Mother West comes a frothy slab (can you have a frothy slab?….whatever) of power pop with more hooky lines than Uncle Bobs Bait Shop of Bobbington. Classic tunes that keep your interest and make you want to listen. This is the sort of music that I like to listen to on a Sunday morning, it might be different for you but that's my feelings. A superbly crafted c.d. that will have you humming along in no time. (CB)

Alternate Realities - Demo CD (US CDr 00)
I guess like most review sites around, desks get littered with this demo CD and that demo CD. Now for years I've always been a fan of demo's, listening to what new bands have to say via their music. I do try and give everything that gets here a fair chance and listen to everything at least once, so today was the turn of, Alternate Realities, a three piece from San Diego, the music is instrumental rock based, the four tracks are lead from the rhythm section of bass and drums, this is not so much of a surprise, has drummer Todd Vinciguerra, has been playing since the age of 5 and has recently wrote a book on the subject. Other band members are Marc Creitz on bass, and Miff Lararcy on guitar who's playing lends an almost psychedelic feel, tying down the complex rhythms that have been laid down by Todd and Marc. The swirling guitar sound on track 2 : The One had me hitting repeat, don't get to thinking this is guitar heaven though, the beats and rhythms that runs in all tracks are the driving force here. The quality of this production is first class, and the after hearing these four tracks I am now ready to hear what can be done on a full CD's worth of music, I just hope we don't have to wait too long for this.
ARCHAIA-'Archaia' (Fr Soleil Zeuhl records 99)
Reissue of a legendary French prog band, although it has to be said I've never heard of them but that isn't saying much. Forget any comparisons to Gong simply because they're French, they come on all epic but without the really annoying made up language that ruins Magma for me. There is a definite edge to these tunes, perhaps picking up a little on the burgeoning punk scene just over the water. Nice use is made of squelchy analogue (well they would be in 1977! Doh!) Synths. Several of the tracks have that nice stoned groove that make you believe that they could play the same track for hours live and the crowd would still yell for more. Not much more I can really say except that fans of Euro weirdness would be rewarded greatly by checking this reissue out.(CB)
IQ - The Lost Attic (UK gep 99)
Here's a tonic for all progressive rock fans on a cold winters nite. This the most recent release from IQ, one of the UK leading lights from the early 80's prog scene who have gone on to achieve more success in the 90's. Firstly you should all know, I've been a fan of IQ from early 1984, until a couple of years ago when I lost track a little of where they were up to. This new 15 track compilation release, including 7 previously unreleased tracks that runs from 1983-1999. Some of the tracks are taken from what are now the infamous IQ Fan club singles, There are two recording of, Hollow Afternoon, the first version from the "rare" Marquee new years eve Gig Single from 1984, which on a good day sell's at $100, and a newly recorded version from earlier this year. I enjoyed both versions, and if I had to choose, well I'd go for the new version, if only for technical merit. Fascination, The Bold Grenadier, Last Human Gateway (middle section) are all taken from various other fan club only singles. Added also are the tracks IQ recorded for various SI MUSIC compilations from a few years ago. Three tracks recorded for the BBC Friday nite rock show in 1984, which at the time, raised the profile of IQ within the UK. Saying all this, I come down in favor on the unreleased tracks. I had heard all most if not all of the other tracks before at some point or another. But with this selection I found plenty to entertain me. The first track on the disc The Universal Scam, is from the SUBTERRANEA session, (as is Eyes of the Blind) which sounded as if it would have fitted well onto the release, but did feel a little unfinished. Track 2 Wintertell, from the Tales from the Lush Attic recording sessions, found IQ in a more acoustic mood, an area I felt IQ should have exploited more over the years. The IQ humour (Pete Nicholls in stockings OH! what a sight) wasn't forgotten when putting this release together, with the inclusion of MY LEGS from 1983, the only things I'd say here is buy the CD and find out for yourself. On the whole this is all very much a collection of classic IQ, an insight into work past and present. This release is not just aimed at filling a gap on the CD shelves of IQ fans, there's enough material here to introduce anyone who has yet to hear IQ, to their world. (MAJR)
Donnamatrix - Cyberia (US DMx songs 00)
Lovingly constructed c.d. of techno flash prog sounds (a genre that I have just made up bandwagon Jumpers!) From loose beginnings highly structured songs evolve. By the term techno flash prog I don't mean a kind of genesis doing prodigy sound, more the sound of people who aren't afraid to use the latest computer tools to enhance the vision of what their music should sound like, without loosing touch of that human feel. There are some dark pieces on this disc and I don't feel that I will really do justice to it until I've listened to it about 20 or 30 times. The disc flows from track to track and at times has a soundtrack feel to it, although what kind of dark visions could be accompanied by this heaven only knows. Sometimes the guitars have an almost Arabic feel to them especially on the intro to the wonderfully named 'Monster Cat 2000' this theme is repeated in the somewhat gentler and more mysterious 'Ambient Cat' which could have gone on for a lot longer in my opinion. This is a c.d. to live with over a period of time, it isn't one to just listen to once, it begs repeated deep listening to. If you want to hear some of this music there are free downloads at their site, which is well worth checking, the only caveat I will add is that you must spell their name right in the search engine or else….
David Davidson - Celtic Fantasy (US green hill 00)
I was unsure what to make of this at first glance, I thought I'd be in for one of those NEWAGE offerings you can buy from "5 Stars and a Moonbeam" you know the things, mass produced CD's for the stressed out businessman on his way home from work. So I was a little taken back with this CD when it set of a full pace along it's tracks. David Davidson is from what I've learned about him, a world class violinist, who has worked with such diverse acts as Dolly Parton to Page&Plant. Here you don't get that horrid dried up sound you get on most NEWAGE CD's, this is alive and full of creative feelings. David sets out to recreate his heritage, here he's gone along way in doing that. There's plenty happening, the use of drums, guitar, Violin, flutes and more give you an insight into the musical world of the Land of the Celts. A wealth of sound that looks at most areas of music you'd expect from a CD that wanted to invoke feelings of Ireland, Scotland and more. None of the tracks stood out for me, but then again, none stood back, I found this a very equal CD somber moods to the more traditional dance style numbers. David has worked on a number of film based offering and with this, you do still get the feel of of a soundtrack to the land. 14 tracks with 13 been instrumental tracks, the last track being a vocal working of Farmers Hand. If you enjoy all things Celtic and found most of the so call Celtic sound that are around a little to unreal, or not alive in the CD's you already own, then this should give you a fresh take on a field I've found to be over worked the last 10 years. Haymarket Riot - Live 67' (Ch RD 00)
Psychedelic vinyl collectors should be aware of this label based in Switzerland by now, if you aren't then it's time to "GET ON THE BUS" because you are missing out. Haymarket Riot are one of those long lost American garage come psych bands from the golden period of sixties music. Recorded live at the famous FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH- Kenstigton on December 1st 1967. Haymarket play their way through 5 classics if not raw numbers. The sound recording here has to be mentioned, it's not the digital recording you get today, but the most basic of forums Two mic's one aimed at the PA the other lead guitar!, my kind of sound. The vocals in the main are distorted but listen-able. The tracks are all what anyone who gets into this sixties groove would except cool raw and in your face sound. Why you ask would anyone want to reissue something that's not in HI-FI stereo sound, and sounds not unlike a Jimi Hedrix bootleg at times, well why not, the effort and packaging the RD put in is superb, a thick card gatefold sleeve, that looks and feel like it's from 67'. The vinyl is high quality, and along with very extensive sleeve notes that give you as much detail as you can get, put this together with the fact that otherwise very few would ever get to hear this, and the answer is then looking right back at you. If you are into vinyl and sixties psych then this has to become of of those "must have" records, this limited vinyl offering won't be around for long, so on my advice, I'd go order a copy now from RD's website, and while your there, check out the other excellent releases they have already out, and are working on for the future.
Forgotten Suns - Fiction Edge 1 (Ch Galileo 00)
I'd passed the comment on Portuguese (English language vocals) band Forgotten Suns demo CD (which we'd received a while ago). Saying then how much the scene had been set for this, their debut release. Starting with the scratchy sound of an old vinyl LP, the sound is soon panned out around the room, filling every gap of sound space as it goes. 70 minutes of what is the next step in the world of progressive metal, gone have the wall-to-wall guitars so many prog-metal bands have relied upon, heading back into the world of progressive rock but keeping a fuller louder sound. Split into 6 main tracks(although 11 on the disc). All of the outer tracks are long numbers, The Journey being 21 minutes plus (some of the inner songs just a minute or two in length). Laid out around the keyboards with powerful driving home guitars, that move you move further and further inside into this concept work with every passing minute. Long passages of instrumental sections are followed by excellent and powered (yet un-extreme) vocals of Linx. To chose any one track that stands out is not the easiest of tasks I see this as one piece of music, not several individual tracks, sections I did look at again where the acoustic passage of Routine and Child along with the final track Betrayed pt2. I'm standing clear of drawing sound-a-like comparisons, it may just condemn FORGOTTEN SUNS to join a clone tree, to which they don't belong.
Balance of Power - Ten More Tales... (US nightmare 2000)
Just issued in the US (this got a European and Japanese release late last year) this is the third release from BOP. All I knew about this band was that their previous release "Book of Secrets" is regarded highly amongst the metal clan. The 10 tracks here come in with just over 50 minutes of music. Opener Day Breaker is a classic rock tune, Track 3 Savage Tears again has all the right moves, and final track the epic, Ten more tales of Grand Illusion, is sure to be a major hit of Heavy metal radio. This 5 piece line up is in the classic form of two guitars, bass, drums and vox, what more can a metal head ask?. Vocal's are from US frontman Lance King, (the base of the band hail from the UK) with his ability to anchors the tracks together, this is sure to work in favor for the band both live, and in the studio. The remaining tracks on the CD all follow similar paths, without sounding too much the same, although the style is very much "as one". If you are already familiar with BOP then no introduction are necessary, but if you are looking for a new metal band to give a listen to, look no further, BOP have it all.
Beaver “Lodge” E.P (Man’s Ruin 1999)
Beaver (from Amsterdam) put out a split C.D with Queens Of The Stone Age Last year. I had gotten the split C.D for Christmas, But I had my eye set on something else so I took it back, now I regret it. Due to living in Canada where there is no such thing as “Stoner” rock, with only two major bands: sHEAVY and Otis. I was in a local record store looking around for anything “Stoner” rock (hoping to find not a thing as usual) I found a promo copy of Beaver’s Lodge E.P for about $5. Being an obsessed stoner rock fan, and remembering my last mistake I snatched that C.D up so fast, it was a deal that was too good to be true. Upon listening to this C.D, Beaver sounded along the lines of Queens Of The Stone Age, mixing variations of light melodies then kicking into heavy distorted grooves, the Lead singer had a really unique voice, which I really liked. This 5 song E.P contains the tracks: Static, Tarmac, Repossessed, Interstate, I Recon. This C.D is 28 minutes and 17 seconds of heavy distorted grooves, Light catchy melodies, cool vocals, and tripped out psych/space grooves. As more and more people get into the “Stoner” rock style of music Beaver keeps getting more fans around the world because of the excellent music they make. Lodge is another notch in the wood of excellent releases (two full length’s, split C.D, E.P) to date. Look for Beaver to continue to the streak for quite a while, and while you’re at it pick up a copy of LODGE you’ll know what I’m talking about. This was one sweet find (specially over here) how can you go wrong? I wasn’t let down, you won’t be either, get some Beaver TODAY! If you would like anything reviewed or have any questions, contact me direct. (Kevin Payne)
Deep Thought - Morphios (Ch demo CD'r 98)
Deep Thought are a 5 piece neo-progrerssive band from Switzerland which hold within it's ranks drums, vocals, guitar, bass and keys. This young band have been around since 1995, with this current line up from 1998. 9 track demo CD running time is 48 minutes long.. What do you get for your money, Deep thought are complex in style, weaving keys, up mixed drums, strong vocals that fit well into the music, and leading guitars. The complex approach to the songs, and how they are played (the band claim to be more of a live band) leaves you looking further into each track the more you listen to them. These 9 tracks are split between shorter tracks like Grave, Anything you want ( an aggressively played love song), and Gone, to longer more worked out tracks Silent four and title track Morphios. Silent four, has anything a progressive rock follower would want, starting slowly and building more and more as you get further into the track. This band have taken very much the European approach on progressive rock, never straying very far from the path. If I had to pick faults with the CD it's very much in the production, you do get the "demo feel" to it, but as the band did this themselves, that's not so much of a crime. As I type this the band are putting the final touches to a new CD which should be ready anyway now ( I shall look out for this). If you enjoy the complex sound of modern styled progressive rock then a worthy visit to the bands web site, should see you able to get copy's of both CD's.
Bottom - made in voyage (US mudlap 99)

Heavy riffing stonner rock from NYC. Bottom, a 3 piece female band, hit out hard on this debut CD. 11 tracks of 70's inspired heavy rock, which on first listen had me struggling to keep up. Vocals/Guitar are from Sina, who's strange vocal talent has hard edges, but never becomes unlistenable. The rhythm section is Nila on bass, and Clementine drums/backing vox. With the emerging stoner rock scene picking up bands from every corner of the world, to make any impact on the market bands are going to need something more. The fact that this is an all female bands might be enough to draw attention, without taking away from the bands ability to rock. Tracks like The liar, the witch & the wardrobe had me going back time again, with it's low end driving drums and bass, Bullseye picks the pace back up. While other tracks worthy of a mention are, Here with some stunning fuzzy guitar leads, 25 Hawaiian again blasts out some great fuzz along with The Garden a pure rock blast. Final track, Shine slowly works it's way to a guitar drenched ending. 40 minutes after this CD started "I knew I'd been rocked" the guitar still swirling around my head has I head off for a cup of coffee. Learning about Stoner rock is not easy, there's a lot of bands doing their thing, to find one who's going to jump the crowd is even harder. Bottom, have what it takes, with US and European tours planned for this year, things should start to move in the right direction.
A short introduction to
FRENCH TV
3.'Virtue in Futility'
4.'Intestinal Fortitude'
5.'Live Yoo Hoo!!!'
6.'The Violence of Amateurs'
(All US Pretentious Dinosaur records)
OK first up, the apologies. These 4 discs have been on my desk for an inordinate amount of time during which I've been ill (twice-sickly child!), started an intense college course, had a couple of alcohol soaked birthday celebrations and been generally too busy to give these discs the time they deserve. So with a fresh cup of Darjeeling I have set off on the trip to discover the delights of top US proggers French TV. Before I go on I must mention what seems to be a growing trend of political awareness in the US prog (sorry to have to keep using that term but you know how some people like labels) community. On the inside of each c.d. booklet is a mini article about such things as military spending, tax reform and other 'conscious' subjects. The scene seems to be both looking backwards towards the political activism of the 60's and the righteous anger of the punk scene - this is something that must be welcomed as political awareness leads to debate and hopefully debate leads to change! That's the politics done, here's the music
Being the brainchild and main musical conduit for the bass skills of Mike Sary the overall sound is, as you would guess heavily rhythmic, the melodies twist and turn on the proverbial sixpence. The first c.d. 'virtue in Futility' has some lovely dreamy keyboard interludes, kind of of easy on the ears, but then it only emphasise the driving hard jazz rock pieces. Modern classical music must certainly be an influence on these guys as the opening passage of the second (bizarrely) named track 'Clanghonktweet' wouldn't sound out of place on one of the more challenging classical labels repertoire. Strange quirky sounds permeate this and the other CDs although they are never used just to shock; rather they add a sense of otherworldliness to the proceedings. 'Intestinal fortitude' begins in a very Zappaesque mood and progresses well along similar lines. This time there is an emphasis on vocals with the whole affair culminating with a version of peter Hammils 'Pioneers over C'. 'Live: yoo hoo' is, unsurprisingly, a live set. This disc demonstrates that the French TV phenomenon isn't just a product of studio wizardry with a 'ohmigod how fast can they play!' feeling being given off. The use of samples is particularly effective in this live setting and BOY can they play! The final CD for your delectation is the most recent. 'The Violence of Amateurs' rarely strays from the inventive and innovative furrow that this band ploughs. There is some fine mutant banjo playing from avant guitar god and Shockabilly man Eugene Chadbourne, who guests on one track.
Any one who wants to discover a band that won't fail to impress would be well advised to check out French TV. To sum them up I'm just going to give you a few words, not as descriptions but just as starting points: jazzy. Humorous, virtuosity, tight, playful, open, inventive, strong, political…….and by the way the cover art is damn fine too!
Rare Blend - Infinity (US custom 1999)
Based in Ohio USA, Rare Blend are a 4 piece instrumental Jazz/Rock based outfit. This CD is out in January 2000 (this copy is a demo CD'r as are so many these days). All 9 tracks show a fine use of the bands talents, mixing styles with some tracks taking the rock stand, other's the jazz. Tracks like Twice upon a time, are more fixed into middle ground rock, almost ballad sounding, while, opening track, Z'Hadum, rely on the jazzier side of the Cd, Blue Samba takes a almost progressive sound on board. The band who consists of Vic Samalot (guitar) Bobbi Hold (keys) Jeffrey Scott (basses) and Paul Stranahan (drums) are going to get a lot of praise for this release, which is sure to cut a sway through the jazz rock field..
Wolverine - Fervent Dream (Eu zizania 99)
Progressive metal outfit from Sweden with 5 tracks on this mini release, that runs for 30 minutes. After various changes in line up and musical directions, Wolverine has struck on a classical progressive inspired metal. First track Whispers in the Dark had me running for cover after after around 2 minutes in, from a attack of snarling vocals that seemed to interrupt this, and all the other tracks. But by the time I'd got to track 3 More than grief, I'd started to enjoy these musical attacks. The 5 tracks are worked out, and almost symphonic at time until you get these severe vocal assaults. Track 4 Again, for me made this a worthy debut release a more molodic number (apart from the grunt vocals), with some great heavy progressive guitar work. The mixing of both snarling death metal, and mainstream prog-metal vocal alignments is on first listen a little off putting, until you get used to it. If you are looking for a different direction in progressive metal, then WOLVERINE might just have the answer.
Quarkspace - The hidden moon (US ejr 99)
Recently issued two CD set from Ohio based crew. The CD arrived here without warning, so off I went to check out their own web site, too see, what this band were about. This is their most recent release, with two more CD's, one video, and a few out of print tapes to their credit. This CD is packaged well a g/f card sleeve like old vinyl . Over two hours of instrumental and vocal, ambient neo-spacerock. The tracks are long, most runs at around 7 minutes plus, with a wide use of guitar, synths ,loop's and more. The tracks work well, and will certainly appeal to wide audience. The boundaries are not set, so a musical flow can take place, running the length of each disc. For me the track from the first disc which stood out was Outerspace highway, which as a real drugged out feel on the vocals. Disc two open's with "I bet he's looking for the spaceman", a 12 minute plus dreamlike piece, which will get all the newage (sic! I hate that word) fans drooling with delight. The rest of this disc takes on a similar approach to disc one, but the tracks are a little more spacey in their approach, everyone should hear, Where Galaxies collide, if just ONCE!. So many comparison could be drawn to this release, Pink Floyd (esp The Circle), TD, and more. Any band that attempt a 2 CD set, in 1999, has to be admired, if not for the work, then for the effort. 15 years ago, this would have been a triple, if not a quad box set of albums. If you want a new listen in the space/ambient/progressive field, you'll do worse than getting this, and at the special price of $16 ( I think, but check ok), it's money well spent. Ordering details and sound samples are on their own site.
Smokin Granny - Sirius matters (US mmp 99)
What was I to make of this, for some reason, I had thought Smokin Granny were a straight forward neo-prog act. I was wrong . The music is a instrumental sound of prog-jazz-rock. The opener Barnacle Bob's Big Bang Bonanza!,this title give's you the feeling that, not all's well in the land where elderly ladies like to smoke. To start with, this is one of the more jazzier based tunes. Track 2 and the longest at 9 minutes plus, Neural pulse, is a little more structured in it's feel, and has a more progressive direction. The mix of jazz elements fit well into the rock settings, the use of acoustic guitars slows sthe pace down, only to be picked back up at any point along the way. There is plenty of scope here for progressive fans to get their teeth into, long tracks cut into shorter 2 minute tunes, Ghost Catcher Box, a eerie tune that would suit any horror movie is worthy of a mention. The complex nature of this release will have people coming back to it, time and time again, if only to see what they missed the last time round. This is the 2nd release from Smokin Granny, the first been a tape only release, with time I'm sure this band will grow in stature and become a favorite around the world in progressive rock circles.

Stone Premonitions are a UK based musical collective/cooperative. They are a independent based label/production house., with a number of bands that included many cross members. I received two tittles from their catalog that runs to well over 20.
The first CD to mention is Rabbit's Hat - Pierce The Dark (UK sp 98) a band, which appears have the ability to issues CD at very regular intervals of around 3 months each. The music is a mixture of sounds, fusing together all manner of sounds, psych, prog, pop, dance ( well, Happy Mondays), even an eastern feel on Hiatus.. I thought looking at the press pack, this label would be into HIPPY ROCK, but no so on the sound of this release. There is some tasty guitar work, which pleased my ears, A post-idealistic-psych sound. I would take a guess at finding Rabbit's Hat doing the festival in the UK. It was, and I'm sure is going to be hard to pigeon holes this band, OK, so I have only heard this one release, and I'd wished I seen more titles from the catalog, but on this outing, although it's taken me a couple of listens to get there, I enjoyed what I heard, and shall await their next release.
The other CD we got in their promo back was Body Full of Stars - Welcome (UK sp 99). This band have two members of Rabbit's Hat amongst their mists. This CD set of a quite a fast pace, with the R&B opener "Welcome!". The other tracks all seam to follow the same vain of, "upfront post modern punk R&B" (?). I didn't find the voice of Mark Dunn easy to swallow on this release, and I struggled to find any great direction in some of the tracks. Missing You,as some nice late nite guitar work, but a little mainstream. B with U, is an aggressive social statement, but Shop Girl, pleased my small mind!. I'm not sure how serious to take this, as I'm sure, Body full of stars ain't taking thing that serious.
I found the idea behind the label interesting, and I'm sure if you get off of stuff that takes a walk of the main road of music, then go look at STONE PREMONITIONS, because I know they will fill a gap in your CD collection that's missing. With a number of bands, and releases, sooner or later, there's gonna be a winner from this label.
The Users - "friendly" (US bdr 99)
OK, so first off, I'd read all the NG reports on how good this is, so when I feasted my hands upon the disc, I was a little excited to say the least, sweaty palms, a dry mouth and more......... I was not to be disappointed neither this is first class guitar psych, a band who'd known each other for a number of years before reaching out to other parts of the US, and finally getting their trip together and get this released. The 11 tracks (60 minutes),of which 10 are self composed and a great Garage sounding cover of Dylan's "As I went out one morning". The music is basement guitar led rock, some top tunes rolled around the disc, opener Commin down is a excellent guitar hyped tune. I know there are going to be the Reed/Pop/Cope comparison's but who really cares, last track YBIF is a late nite Dancer!!......... do yourself a favor, If you get of on guitar rock, buy this.
SECRET ARCHIVES IF THE VATICAN - REFORMATION… (UK bdr 99)
What a nice surprise this c.d. was. It's almost like someone said to me 'what would you like a band to sound like ?' The Secret Archives of the Vatican (please can I call them S.A.V. to save my typing finger, yep I'm up to almost 10 words per minute now ) manage to combine drum & bass, Indian, Arabic and Trance music amongst others in an excellent debut cd. Acid basslines wiggle, (isn't REBIRTH wonderful..boring techno muso aside) trancey drum patterns mesmerise and Traditional instruments all combine to make a wonderful melange of sound. The c.d. was home recorded and self financed so I suggest that you get to their web site immediately and order a copy of this c.d. for yourself and one for your sad friend who only listens to chart pap music. This is the type of music that really should be encouraged more. It crosses many boundaries and takes in a lot of diverse influences. I really don't want to sound like I'm too over enthusiastic but this is the best cd. I've heard this month and I don't often get to say that. I'm not going to describe any of the tracks or even compare them to other bands but you must get to hear this. If it don't make ya dance then you've got no feet!!!.
VIRGINEERS - SPRING (US PRIVATE 97)
Excellent 6 track issued "POP PSYCH" offering from this US duo, from the opening sitar guitar of "love circus" to the sinister psych of "Dr Clouster", where time has stood still and its London 1967 all over again, there not a week track insight. For more info either contact myself ,or check out the bands own web site.
ROBOT---"PALM TREE" ( US t.o.n 98)
Proficient U.S. alt.rock…Kinda` like R.E.M meeting the Cure at a `Beatles Catchy Songwriting` seminar in Buttfuck, Illinois. Only this bunch of escapees from the local glee club didn't attend the all important final seminar, in the brightly lit seminar room, with the free coffee, mineral water and those little minty things that are supposed to freshen your breath but never do. Instead they were skulking about in the dark ,dank and frankly unhealthy alley at the back. Discussing how fucked up their personal lives were and smoking too many high tar cigarettes. Personally I cant fault the playing, singing or production of this c.d. and I'm sure Robot sweated blood in the completion of their meisterwerk .But for me this lacks a certain spark. File under Pedestrian but worth watching. ( Cris Baldwin @ 1999)
WHY? THINGS BURN---"BEFORE YOU SLEEP" (US t.o.n 98)
More R.E.M influenced work, remarkably similar in many ways to labelmates Robot. Unfortunately being so similar to the other band means that I must apply the same sort of criticisms to them. The band is very competent but their is just something that isn't creating a buzz for me. In some places they sound a little like famously dour UK glum rock band Radiohead. Perhaps they could do with an injection of Radioheads much vaunted "experimentalism" because just being miserablists doesn't quite do it for me. (Cirs Baldwin 1999)
CLUB T.O.N. ---LABEL SAMPLER
This T.O.N. Label sampler relies heavily on the talents of earnest young men with guitars and determined expressions few of the residents of this world of gritty sounds are outlined below. Terror at 10,000 feet opens the c.d. with 2 guitar-based slabs of tuneful prog based rock. Next up come Shoegazer who do anything but stare at their shoes but instead give us screaming heavy metal with high pitched vox. The standout track of this compilation is "Come on Home" by Lost Johnny. A grinding track of Beefheart meets Loop strangeness, know that that probably sounds a bit odd but it does. My only reservation is that its a remix and it would be nice to hear what the original sounds like (hint, hint!). So if guitars and introspection are your cup of tea check out T.O.N. records, they might have something that will interest you. Myself I like my music to have a little more oomph, don't ask me to define what that is but I know what it is when I hear it. (Cris Baldwin 1999)
SyNtHuSeR - Eleven one ( US demo CD'r 99)
Interesting synthesizer piece from the starnge Mr Byerly. All music is composed and played by himself, but as the tracks form a passage from left to right, there is a full band sound to this. 7 tracks that gain a pace that enter into one long epic suite. Recorded late last year, this full production is worth looking out for if you like modern instrumental music. Very much in the JMJ, Mike Oldfield bag, but a little more tunes than Mr. Oldfield TB3. Check out he's own web site, for Music, UFO's(?) and more!.
Where echoes end - By the picking of my thumb (AUS beaks ahoy 99)
Just issued industrial landscape suite from this Australian Act (duo Eddie Katz & Paul Read) When the pounding beats of the opening minutes start to move on to a move driving rock sound that mix in Voice and sound samples, you get to feel that you are never quite sure where the next musical attack is about to come from. There is no easy ride here for the listener and if you are looking for 3 minutes pop rock tunes look away now. It would do the band no justice at all to try and fit them into any musical pigeon box. 19 tracks (71 minutes) split into section, this may as well be one, as the feel is of one long track, this is a true musical journey, the road is open and long, as it takes in many musical styles from the dark intense ambient sounds to the upbeat rhythms. If anyone likes music to task the mind, this surely has to be it, the classical Celtic opening of part 3!, then moves onto the more constructed of the songs been followed by some of the finest moments on the CD. Some masterful spoken words and dramatic keyboards and piano give this a progressive feel, but the word progressive here as to be seen as leading the way forward and not at all aiming back to the progressive bands of the 70's. Towards the end the mixing in of some almost techno tracks just had another level, female vocals rise then fall away. The subject matter of some of the tracks are not easy, Nazi's, KKK, capital punishment, media related un-truths and more. The overall sound here is very hard to tag down, and after the fourth listen I gave up trying to label it, and just enjoyed this epic musical treat. The keys and piano are excellent the sound samples even better, the outcome, what can only be thought of as the best underground CD release for a long time. Maybe progressive, maybe even progressive metal! (in places) but which ever way you try to find this one, you will just come back to the fact that this could be the finest musical outing of 1999. If you want your musical mind pushed to the limits, then pushed a little further, I recommend you get this NOW, don't hang around waiting to hear it from a friend. The art work that comes with this just adds to the whole surroundings, quoting Shakespeare, this just makes you want to look even deeper into a land, where echoes end.
Third Echo - Circuits ( US demo CD'r 99)
Recently issued demo CD release from US trio. Strong guitar and keys, on a selection of constructed songs based around the input of all three guys. Some of the tracks have a slight progressive feel, but on the whole more power pop/rock tunes. Although some of the guitar work does stand out at times. For me highlights had to be titles track "Circuits", "Rescue me" and more mainstream that's might appeal to AOR fans, and "Rock Bottom" a great instrumental ballad!. Worth looking out for, and a worthy first CD.
Under the Sun - 1997 demos and more (US cd'r 98)
Now there is a strange name for a CD!, but this is a collection of demos and live stuff from LA based 4 piece outfit UNDER THE SUN. The first 3 tracks come from the 1997 studio session, Garden of Autumn, Golden voyage and From Henceforth now and forever (ps: 124). Then comes two tracks recorded live in Hollywood December 97, Perfect world and Breakwater. Finishing off, a live set recorded at BANANAS November 28th 97. The demo session is excellent with all the right moves to keep any " heavy progressive rock " fan happy, nice guitars, keys, strong vocals. The last track(s) is a live set of 36mins and comprises 5 tracks, 4 of the above plus Dreamcatcher. After the master DAT was damaged the band were left to re-master this live tape of the show. Strong powerful set, this tape gives the listener the real "bootleg" approach to the show. Mixing in the feel of many of the strong US mid 70's progressive acts like Kansas and early Styx, and a sound not unlike Black Sabbath on the live set, this is going to sound good to many ear's. I'm not quite sure if this CD is available from the band, but if it is I would track down a copy quick while their around, before UNDER THE SUN start to become a name on the tongue of every rock fan around.
Charlie Starkwearther - Where I'm calling from (US private 97 )
I know this is a older release but thought I'd drop it in anyway. When I came across this release, checking out one of my past times, the Bruce Springsteen news group's, I found that Charlie had used Bruce's "Nebraska", as he's bench mark for this. How shocked I was to find this a far more rock orientated release to the bleak and wonderfully stark "Nebraska". The songs are a full band sound of a sort of blend of Inxs/Simple Minds fronted with Mick Jagger alike vocals. Most track's are self penned but there is one Springsteen cover included. Although drawing on the darker side of thing's in life, this is a full powerful rock outing. It's worth a trip to Charlie's web site for more details and a listen. Charlie is currently working on a new recording, it will be interesting in which direction he takes himself now.
Tara- Reeds Strings Skins (UK private 98)
Recently issued CD only, from UK folk trio. Formed in the later part of 97, this trio have issued this self financed CD, Mixing traditional material and some self penned tracks, drawing on the strong Celtic influence. A mix of jigs, reels and strong arranged Celtic based vocal tracks, makes this a very enjoyable listen if your into Celtic/folk music. The band are playing live in and around the UK and are always adding new materiel to there live set. The band can be contacted at:
BLACK CAT MANAGEMENT::::::P.O. BOX 5: LYDBROOK: GL17 9QG: UK
Regulators - Bar & Grill (US southbound 98 )
Smoking guitars hard edged vocals and kick ass rock and roll music. The Regulators offer and then deliver, what is sure to be one of the best laid back guitar rock releases for a long time. If your into US southern rock, then this is sure to hit the spot. A Gritty blues and rock mix, with sound not unlike Free at times, this cruises from the start of "BREAKIN OUT" to the finish of "SWEET SUSTAIN" a 7 minute track which is my favorite track on the CD. With not let up in sight, anywhere on this release the Regulators are SMOKIN.
Prussian Blue - Zielasko (UK tigga 98)
Prussian Blue are a local band to me, but until I found them on this thing we call the "web" I had yet to cross their path. Due to the power of modern technology I am now a more enlightened person!!. Seriously I like them, they play a blend of folk/rock tunes. Six in total on this "mini" CD where in the days of old, would have run in at nearly a LP length offering. Five of these six track been written by the band. Fronted by the voice of Kate Gee, this first track Destiny, set's the tone for the rest of the CD, a fast moving tune that blends the elements of folk and rock, with a hint of pop. The following tracks are Shadows of the night, Back on the road, WLTM (altough these two tracks did sound alike to my untrained ear's) , and Don't hold it against me, A classy atmospheric tunes with haunting vocals and top form guitar work. Before finishing with Sandy Denny's Who knows where the time goes, A classy version, "Kate sing's Sandy". The tracks are well wrote, and constructed round Kate's voice, and the guitar playing from Phil, with Dave Gee on bass. This release has the tone and feel of Joni Mitchell, Suzane Vaga, the Cranberries, A pleasant treat for female voice fans. The band are playing live in the UK and recording a new CD, which I shall await the arrival of (please).
Thomas Metcalf - ONE (US private 1990)
Originally released a decade ago, this is the second time around for this release, trying to take advantage of the improved distribution and accessibility granted by the net. Instead of influencing people's perceptions with titles Thomas Metcalf has simply given each of his compositions a single letter title. The music is very filmic with touches of both the Residents quirky rhythm structures and Jean Michele Jarre's strong use of electronic washes and textures. The stand out track for me is 'E' which starts with industrial percussion and ascends into complex strands of sound. Some of the sounds and rhythmic techniques do ground this disc firmly in 1990 which leads it to sound a little dated but this aside it is definitely one to look out for. (CB)
Ok, it's spot the braincell time and I have a small confession to make. This disc is again on the Mother West label (see above for a quite feeble attempt at reviewing their sampler) and very nice it is too! Tight, brutal metal with raging guitars and an attitude that knocks a lot of formulaic poodle rockers into a cocked hat (weird expression or what?) My only problem in completing this review is that like a complete idiot I've mislaid the press release and bio that the label supplied. All I can tell you is that the band comes from either central or South America and that they sing in Spanish …or is it Portugese? All that uncertainty aside I think that given the right breaks they could be big. So in concluding I'd just like to say sorry to the band for being so vague and to encourage you to get in touch with Mother West if you want any of the details that I haven't been able to give you.
Musea Records have operated out of France for a number of years now, fixed into the "progressive" end of the market. Here we have two of their more recent releases. Both of these are compilation. At a price that can only astound you 35FF per disc (less than a fiver).
Le Meilleur Du Rock Progressif Japonais (cat No FGBG 4262.AR)
If you hadn't guessed it, a introduction to the world of Japanese prog. 13 tracks cut from releases over the last couple of years, bands like,Ars Nova open the disc, a strong instrumental track. Next up is Teru's Symphonia Maria, a female (well I thought so) vocal track with all the trapping of modern prog, complex keys and guitar work. All of the following works, are for my ears likable. Nothing to heavy, nothing to hard. Very much in a classical style at times, then full forward neo-prog. A mix of male/female vocal track along with instrumental works, gives a great entry into modern progressive rock from the far east.
Un Voyageen progressif Voulume 2 (Cat No FGBG 4300.AR)
Another excellent CD compilation that this times gives you an insight into progressive rock from around the world. Bands like the opening Finisterre are from Italy, their track Tempi Modern, is a great instrumental. Second up are Quidam with Cheerful, for me the stand alone track from this release, a Polish band with stunning female vocals, with a strong Celtic progressive folk feel. Other bands that follow are Kenso(Japan) 4/3 de trio(France) Fonya(USA) Men of lake(Italy) and more, all tracks are very high quality and gives a insight to what Musea make available.
Murder in the Cathedral - Afraid of......(Fr private 99)
Vinyl junkies beware, this is the 2nd release from French band Murder in the Cathedral, their first is sold out, so I wouldn't hang around on this one either. Only 500 copies have been pressed on 190gm vinyl with stunning psyched out color sleeve design. The music is very much fixed into the tradition of the US west coast sound of the late sixties. Some of the guitar work is amazing esp. on track 2 Acid Sea and track 9, God above Suspictione. The band pull no punches going straight into what they want from their music, quoting bands of such caliber as Quicksilver and Plastic cloud as influences, they claim the baton for 90's ACID ROCK. Not so much a retro sound as a reinvention of the sound of thirty years ago. If you are lover of the late sixties where the post psychedelic pop bands hadn't quite made the progressive sound yet, then I'd recommend a trip to Murder's web site, sounds samples and ordering details are on-line.
PLANET JAUNE - BUBBLES IN SPACE (UK demo only CD'r)
Well crafted modern alternative rock with that almost obligatory nod to the swinging sixties. Some of the tracks reminded me of the Jam in their earlier punk rock days before Weller decided he wanted to be a rock star. The title track 'Bubbles in Space' features an almost out of tune guitar sound which certainly grabs your attention and draws you in to the track. The bands 60's retro feel is ably displayed on several of the tracks especially the track 'O.U' where a 60's style pop vocal is skilfully blended in with end of the millennium guitar styles. In all a very effective debut, I must say however that there are a host of this type of bands doing the circuit at the moment and for one band to really shine out it's going to take luck in getting that initial exposure.
Machina Coeli - Finitor Visus nostri (It private 99)
Released earlier this year in a LTD edition of 700 copies, this has now been picked up on and now distributed worldwide my US label MOONCHILD (see elsewhere). At only 25 minutes long I found this a little short, in the fact just as I'd got into listing to it, when it was all over. Apart from this fact, this is a great piece of modern instrumental classical progressive rock. The obvious Mike Oldfield, JMM, TD comparison will be drawn but with complex synth sound and a medieval feel on track four The Castle, there is something for everyone here. This is also sure to find favor with the ever increasing band of NEWAGE fans that are looking to the world of instrumental progressive rock for something a little more lively than "Dance with the whales Vol. 33"
A refreshing change here on what had started to become a little boring, Glam rock is back, alive and well and living in Florida. 7 tracks of Bolan & Bowie inspired 70's pop tunes................ I just loved this, half hour of great tunes, no thought had to be used, no long drawn out bits, just straight to the point good music. Rock Star, Get on Down, and Star struck, should give you all the idea what this is about, stand out track, if not all of them is, Morning Glory Sunrise 7 minutes worth here, that add's a longer more deeper look at Jeff's work.
KEVIN KELLER - PENDULUM (US es 99)
Kevin Keller produces a wonderfully varied ambient journey with many elements. Very rhythmic with lots of drones pulsing away to back up sparkling sounds of both natural and electronic origin. The Cello, played to great effect by David Darling, is particularly good to hear in this ambient setting. The slow passages are nicely balanced by fast sequenced runs, which keep you racing along with the complex bass lines. Disembodied voices flow in and out of the music and lend an air of mystery and almost menace, either way it certainly makes for effective music. Whether listened to for contemplative purposes or just as a c.d. in its own right this is a very satisfying disc.
LEKTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES..."SOUNDSCAPE GALLERY"
VOL.1,2 & 3
These 3 volumes from US label "LEKTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES" cover a lot of ground. From true drifting Ambience to Really challenging Illbience.
A couple of names I was already aware of ,such as Michel Huygen of spanish Electronicists 'NEURONIUM' and Hans-Joachim Roedelius from Kraut rock legend 'CLUSTER'. Many of the tracks on all 3 cd's float along nicely but avoid the pitfalls of the sugary sweet ambient sound canon that usually infest such comps.
VOLUME 1 in the series concentrates on the sounds of inner space with contemplative slow paced tracks ideal for relaxing to.Its not all just happiness however, a couple of the pieces do build to a place that is actually quite dark.A cd that can be used to accompany oneself on an inner journey and as most people know, you don't always like what you find at the end of the trip.
VOLUME 2 covers much the same sort of ground but with a much darker feel to it but the tracks are nonetheless hypnotically entrancing."In Impermanence" by Hans Christian has a lovely warm distortion to it which, combined with an Arabic feel, brings to mind the work of the late Muslimgauze. The track by Caul recalled some of Eno's more sombre ambient moments.A small tip ;don't listen to this stuff on your P.C. speakers they're probably not up to the job and will crackle & reverberate (just like mine are now!)
VOLUME 3 begins in a much lighter vein with a track of pulsing sequencer lead tunefulness think of Tim Blake without the poor vocals and you're almost there. The track featuring Rodelius with collaborator Tim Story is a gentle piece of piano romanticism underscored by Story's unsettling electronica. The strengths . that the second volume displayed are built upon in this (at the moment) final volume
As I said these CD's were a nice surprise for me and quite frankly ones that I can wholeheartedly recommend.
SPACECRAFT-'HUMMEL'
One of my earliest memories is of being allowed to stay up to watch the historic moon landing of Apollo 11.This sparked of a lifelong fascination with space both real and imaginary.I'v travelled to strange worlds with the likes of Asimov,Heinlein and more recently Greg Bear (plug, plug) So when a cd comes along by a group called Spacecraft well I just had to have a go did'nt I?. SPACECRAFT are, for this flight; Tony Gerber,John Rose & Diane Timmons. The music was the result of a live performance at the Hummel Observatory in Eastern Kentucky. According to the sleeve notes the music 'Reflected and Directed movements of Laser Light Refracting across the Dome' (of the Observatory I assume) It would have been nice to have been able to read more about this process and perhaps understood a little more of its origins. That however is just me being nosey and does not detract too much from the contents of the cd itself. The music is a collection of pulsing Synth tunes very much in the style of certain Geman Keyboard based bands.Where it differs is that there is a certain Organic Elegance to these tunes.Whilst the inspiration may be a Million or more miles away the scale of the music is definately human sized,so you don't feel completely lost in the swirling Pulsars and Black holes of music and sound.A contemplative collection that I could imagine would have been a delight to watch in the making.(By the way Spacecraft, if you would like me to come over and review your next live outing just send a pre-paid airline ticket to .............. )
SPACECRAFT-'SPACECRAFT'
This cd by Spacecraft is a completely different kettle of Martian bacteria. Inspired by the data transmissions from the Voyager Jupiter Mission it is much more of a ambient entity. Almost Industrial sounds permeate the soundscape and tones and textures fly around at what appears to be random.Underneath this seemingly simple collection of Ambient sounds is a tightly produced and well thought about struture. It is very easy for this type of experimental work to go nowhere, just being consumed by the fact that it is an experiment and that the artist has a nice collection of weird sounds. With this release as with the one above some visuals would be nice to complement the sounds. Perhaps when DVD becomes more of a D.I.Y possibility groups like SPACECRAFT and their label LEKTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES will lead the way forward .
ASHLEY~STORY-'DROP'
In this release from LEKTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES the melodic workings of Tim Story are set against the more 'on the edge' nature of collaborator Dwight Ashley. This pairing sets up tension in the music giving some tracks the aural equivalent of a film noir feel .The interplay of a normal piano with odd washes of electronic textures seem to bring out overtones that maybe only exist in the listeners ears .Nonetheless the music is strangely beautiful with an ethereal edge to it. For some reason the title track 'DROP' hauntingly reminded of a french film soundtrack. Maybe this is a real film or just one that I have imagined, but this must give you some idea of the mood of the music. Overall a cd of brooding tunes with a dark ambience about them. The best description I could give is, if you picture a chocolate wrapped up in a barbed wire wrapper. It's that bitter sweet experience that gives this cd its very definate edge. File under Queasy Listening.

Spacecraft - Earthtime Tapersty (US es 99)
This is the third and most recent issue from US trio Spacecraft. On this release they recruit in Diane Timmons a vocalist and music teacher from Kentucky. Now as I had not heard their previous works (see review) I was unsure what I would get. This is an excellent well crafted synth based instrumental piece with a Slight vocal involvement. Not so much newage, but very much in the TD direction. The ambient sounds flowed around the room filling all corners, and gave a rich feeling to the air, making out a almost trance like sound at times. I'm not the best person to comment on this style of sound, but I did find "earthtime" a pleasant change to hearing guitars screaming at me. (MJ)
Onoffon - Your Mind ( US nfn 99)
Brand new offering from US outfit. Their first (see pervious review) impressed me, and so does this, but not in the same way. This is one of those bands, that you can't fit anywhere, their not rock, their not POP, their just not. This their second CD is a little more jazzy than their first. The songs are shorter and more to the point. The musicianship, is has tight as it could be, all the songs are extremely well Executed. They are a class act. As with their first outing this is a mix of musical styles mostly jazz, blues, rock, But Onoffon are leaning more towards a jazz piece here. There is still a element of rock, especially on "wet legs" think what you will, and the opening track Your Mind (great bass line) . The rest of the tracks have a low end jazz feel, and with this I don't mean trad jazz, or even modern jazz, their just jazz. The last track is a little talk over a piano base with a nice sax ending. Mixing in a couple of instrumentals tracks, this CD has flow to it. They have that Downtown jazz/blue's feel at times. Which I'm sure will appeal to people, I just don't feel that Onoffon want to, or will cross over into the mainstream of music.
Two most recent releases
Unit 25 DARK RED: A stark feeling of a industrial landscape arises from within this 70 minutes modern classical suite. With the opening sounds of wind swept open road, Larry takes you on a musical journey filling the air for the next hour. You will feel the cool breeze blowing while you float along on this minimal but well thought out and constructed piece. I am no great fan of "newage" music, but with this I felt relaxed, and enjoyed the journey of layered sounds and ambient feel.
Electrochoral Dreams: Most recent release, this hour long suite enters into the dreamscape feeling of a choral gathering, sounds rise then fall away, giving the feeling that you are waiting for the tide to rise on a long forgotten beach. Larry is offering, then gives this excellent piece. I'm sure that if you are interested in modern electronic classical music, then both of these and his previous work should, and will appeal to you.
Klangstorm - Same (UK private 98)
This is the first full release from Klangstorm, a 60 minute plus instrumental progressive epic. Which I'm sure will stand out from the crowd. Mixing and fusing the sounds of the German krautrock explosion, with the feel of the US west coast and the Progressive touches of PINK FLOYD. First released in May 1998 to coincide with a live performance at an English art gallery, with just 30 original copies pressed as a CDr , and with just a hand full of copies ending up on the collectors market, one copy was sold to a US collector for $40. This is now a full production of 500 copies. If you are a fan of CAN, JIMI HENDRIX, GRATEFUL DEAD ,FAUST , and the likes of , there is something here that is sure to appeal to you. 13 tracks, that blend into one, with the tight guitar playing standing out. With lots of effects and few interesting samples thrown in, helping along the way. The feel of a floating hypnotic journey runs from the opening sounds to the final bars. This to me could become the"Dark side of the moon" for THE new MILLENNIUM.

Pallas - Beat The Drum (UK private 98)
Scottish hard edged prog rock outfit Pallas have finally issued a new CD, after promising a new recording for a number of years they have now issued this new 11 track (72 minute) CD. Some of the tracks have been around for a number of years, after the ill fated "voices in the dark" project that never was quite finished off, although most of those tracks did appeared on the cassette only release "sketches". Jumping back full frontal with this new CD, Pallas power there way though these tracks, with there usually upfront , up beat sound. Hard guitaring, power house drumming and roaring keyboards. I first saw Pallas back in 1983, where they started my liking of "progressive" music, Pallas have now grown up with this release, a more hard edged rock CD, than there early "progressive" moments. Starting the CD is Call to arms, a fitting start, a six minute power rocker with strong guitar leads, and a excellent mixed sound which sets the CD rolling. Next track is the 9 minute title track, telling a tale of post cold war Europe, An eery piano opening with the vocal talent of Alan Reed coming into his own here. Tracks like the older, Hide & Seek follow mixing with more recently wrote material, tracks Insomniac and All or nothing and the excellent Spirits, are shorter more powerful rock based tunes. Blood and Roses is where I feel the vocals shine here, a slower number with keyboard backing see's Alan Reed take full control, building toward the end, finishing of with the whole band joining in. Last but one track is Wilderness years, another hard edged power epic, up front drumming stand out. Finishing the CD is the 8 minute classic rock track Fragment in the sun, a slow start that then builds over layered keys, a power house guitar sound, mixing the vocals of Alan Reed and bass player Graeme Murray, taking in a instrumental break with some excellent guitar soloing from Niall Mathewson, before the final vocals over the keyboard of Ronnie Brown. If you know the Pallas of old and liked them, I'm sure you will enjoy this as much as any of there previous work, If you are new to the world of Pallas and like your rock music with strong guitars, powered bass and drums, clean vocals and layered keyboards then I would strongly recommend you check this one, a trip to there own web site, where you will find more info and sound samples. The CD should be in the shops in January of 1999, until then it can only be obtained mail order. Pallas show that they still have all there musical ability after a long time off the "music" scene, where most of this time was spent writing and recording for this release.
ONOFFON - Surrender Now (US private 97)
California based trio ONOFFON debut cd seams to offer something for all. Describing there self as a "Progressive Jazz" group, in the sense the music is a progressive sound, and there are a lot of jazz influence. Mixing instrumental and vocal tracks, The first track, and title track is a more bluesy number, with a strong jazz back line running though it. Please baby please, is a very upbeat downtown bluesy/jazz number. The contrasts in musical styles, work well, keeping you on your feet. Taking in the, almost free jazz instrumental tune of Weekend in Montreal with some excellent sax soloing, to the powerhouse tune of Your reality the tracks move from one to the next giving the listener a musical treat. The cd finishes of with two 11 mins+ tracks, and are the more constructed of the "progressive" tracks , with If a thief was were I, an excellent acoustic number, and Remember only the last track, for me been the best track on the cd, a harder edged tune with long instrumental passages. All vocal tracks are extremely strong with the vocals of Don Lake, along with Dave Goode on drums, and Von Babasin pumping bass and keys, the other two band members. If you are prepared to try something that might test your musical taste, then give this one ago, due to the changing styles of the tracks, there is plenty here to keep you listening for a long time.
Mystery - Destiny (Ca unicorn 98)
Canadian 5 piece band, offer this their third release here. A fine blend of classical elements of both new and old progressive rock. A concept idea running though this 8 track release. The music has all that one would, and can expect from a competent band. From the opening, this is full web of sound. Entering the realms of progressive metal, classic prog rock, and AOR, the voice of Gary Savole, is almost Steve Perry alike esp on the title track.. The excellent musicianship, can't be found to be at fault, the guitar work from Micheal St-Pere is stunning at times. All the tracks are tightly played. The last track, the 14 minute plus "Shadows of the lake" is first class, offered off a full pace it then, slow to a more melodic Marillion (Fish era) type atmospheric builder which then shoots back again to a more up tempo sound. I'm sure with the right exposure then MYSTERY will become a extremely big act to follow. Journey, Marillion, Dream Theater fans take note, this is OUT NOW, go buy it.
Ned Ludd - A Zero ore (It private 98)
Italian folk rock?, when I received an e-mail from this band asking me if I'd be interested in reviewing them, the only answer could have been YES. Based in Rome and formed some 10 years ago, Ned Ludd have gone though many musical and personal changes. Finally coming together as they are now a few years ago, recording and producing this debut CD last year. Mixing the elements of older more traditional Italian folk music, with the modern feel of the Pogues & Levellers,(if not in musical direction, then in attitude). This 15 track release is sung in Italian (apart from the instrumental tracks!), but for most of us non speaking Italians there is an English translation included in the CD book. The song are mostly political statements, based on happening in Italy over the last few years. The band consist of 5 members, with a wide range of instruments from the acoustic guitar and voice to the move adventurous bouzouki and accordion!. The singing voice comes from Band leader Gianluca who's strong vocal range ads a very unique feel to the band . If you enjoy a wide range of folk music then I would say that more than a passing interest in this band wouldn't go a miss they play well constructed songs which will appeal to all lovers of both modern and traditional folk music.
This c.d. demonstrates the capabilities of the oddly named "SAMCHILLIAN TIP TIP TIP CHEEEPEEEEE" which is basically a computer keyboard system whereby keystrokes are interpreted by a midi device that then plays musical tones generated by a synth. According to the leaflet that accompanied this disc it enables the musician to " Create improvisational flurries that test the limits of the imagination" My first thought on listening is that it was the ghost of 10cc with hints of They Might Be Giants taking turns at doing the vocals. Not a good thing for me but if you liked 10cc there you go. The tunes are actually a varied bunch, a nice double bass is evident on the track "Gloom and Doom" and the electronics of "Spidolene" are used to good effect to create a sparse and spooky sound. I feel that where this c.d. works for me its when its being more unequivocally experimental. Unfortunately the above named electronic device doesn't seem to make that much of an impact on me, perhaps if I was to hear a recording just made by this system its use and versatility would become more evident.
German based Limb are a specialist label concerned with issues "metal" related releases, I say related as with the batch of promo copies which hit my desk, there is a fast difference in styles from the more melodic piece to the out and out hard guitaring that most metal fans look for. If you are into the heavier side of things, and don't mind looking a bit deeper into things I'm sure you will find something at Limb to tune into...............
Recent release include:
Kenziner - Timescape
Issued in June Kenziner debut CD. and brainchild of Finish guitarist Jarno Kesinen, this 10 track issue is what all progressive metal fans would expect, powered guitar leads and monster keys, moving from track to track with easy and speed, strong vocals from Stephen (ex Billy the Kid), makes for a a strong first release from which, I'm sure this band will only go forwards from.
Ivory Tower - same
Again debut issued CD from this German 5 piece band, 8 tracks clocking in at over 58 minutes. From the opening bars of one life in Asia, to the more melodic track of Spring, All tracks are of a very high quality, with the excellent production bringing everything to the fore at just the right moments. If you are into progressive metal, even new Marillion, then I'm sure this will appeal to you.
Without Warning - Step Beyond
Third release from NY based 5 piece band, This is a more subdued metal offering, 9 tracks with the longest and for me stand out track of The Embrace running in at over 9 minutes. A more laid back vocal approach is taken on here, not really metal sound as such more of an heavy progressive A.O.R sound here. I feel this will appeal to all rock fans from around the world, and with the right air play, and pushes in the right direction could see Without Warning becoming an household name.
Magnitude 9 - Chaos to Control
Formed in the US in April 97, here's is Magnitude 9 first full release, with all the band playing in previous outfit's, you get what you paid for here. A full blooded progressive metal release 10 tracks of quality metal excellent guitar playing, powered keys, laid out bass line, strong vocals with excellent melodies. I'm this sure will give fans of Symphony X, Dream Theater, and the likes, a real musical treat.
Eldritch - El Nino
Third release from Italian band, which for me sorry didn't do anything, I found it very staright forward metal based music, things I seam to hear most days. I'm sure if you are into the more main line metal you will enjoy this, the playing is excellent, but for my ears it just didn't do it for me.
Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands
Now here is a real treat, for any music lovers of the heavier side of things. Italian band Rhapsody third release. Formed in the early 90's. Here we are treated to the epic which I feel might have been missing in symphonic metal. From the opening almost operatic first track of Epicus Furor, see's the band move quickly into Emerald Sword an epic piece of speed guitar over what can only be thought of as a Celtic metal!!!!. Tight playing, classical elements and a style mixing of the Italian progressive legends of the early 70's, and the metal explosion of the 80's make this a piece that will appeal to both metal and progressive fans alike. With the title track for me a, progressive metal classic.

The Field - Same (US private 98)
4 piece band, playing a interesting blend of pyscho-prog-punk!, I know, no such thing, but listen to it, I feel you might agree with me, a modern progressive rock sound, with a attitude . Ten tracks, Split into two section, a political statement of the 90's. Excellent musicianship, Great use of instruments, moog, Mellotron and a few other bits. Ten Constructed songs that attack at times, with aggressive guitars and strong vocals.
Burnt Noodle - The Noodle and the Damage ( US private 98)
More straight progressive/psych piece here with 8 tracks building in length from the opening "we've reached the ocean" a 4 minute prog based piece with a experimental style, followed by the "fall song" a more acoustic feeling piece with a feel of the US west coast in the late 6T's. Other excellent tracks are the 8 minute "thin air" a dream scape progressive piece , and the epic 22 minute "noodles in a nutshell", a floating piece with a few nice samples and a floydian feel.
If you are a fan of quality guitar work, and strong vocals, I'm sure on these two release's you will find something you like. You can contact Paul for more information @:

MASHER-Get the Spiders off My Eyeballs" ( US private 99)
A good Garagey feels to this disc straight from the first track. Nice fuzzy Guitars chime out in a way that reminds me of some of the more bubblegummy Pebbles and Nuggets bands. Female vocals on some of the tracks also bring to mind some of the groups I used to go and see in the early 80`s, anyone remember Hagar The Womb, What happened to them? One really nice thing about his group is that they haven't succumbed to the problem that I have with a lot of current groups putting stuff out on c.d. is that is that they haven't felt pressured to fill all 74+ minutes of the CD's capacity. So many albums these days are at least 30 minutes too long due to temptation of filling a c.d. and so are bulked out with fillers and substandard material. I understand and applaud bands wanting to give their fans value for money but sometimes I`d rather have quality over quantity. Anyway, this c.d. is in my opinion very good especially the final track, which has a mad for it surf feel. I get the feeling that this is a band I`d like to go and get drunk to. Which in my book is a compliment By the way cool sleeve, cool sticker and the thickest screen printing I`v ever seen on a c.d. just adds to the appeal of this band

The services of Mary Goode ( UK gargoyle 99)
Now in the world of progressive rock, there are a few things that always add something special to the music, now one to me has always been a story to be told in the music, and the second, is female vocals, here we have both!!!. Janison Edge are a UK neo-prog supergroup, all the band members have played with one band or another at pervious times. Five piece outfit, that have wrote and arranged this excellent debut CD, the vocals of Sue Elements are stunning, there is no room for any criticisms here, she has a good vocal range, from souring high end, to the lower end, almost frightening strong at times. The CD tells the tale of Mary Goode, a true star if ever there was one. The musicianship is first class, if not world class, in the last 18 years I have seen many of the British progressive acts, and I'm sure I will not hear any better that Janison Edge, they have the power to offer these tracks, built up guitar and keyboards run all over; there is a powerful bass and drum line when called upon. 9 tracks and 65 minutes of high energy progressive rock, OLDMAN and JOKER ( a more abstract number) are two tracks I would pull from the crowd if needed too, but there is no need; all of this CD is worth listening too, time and time again.

The cleaver use of SHADOWS - ( can private 99)
My father always told me, never judge a book by it's cover, well I'm sorry to say I did just that with this release when it fell into my in-tray it got pushed to the back above once, I just didn't fancy listing to this, all because I didn't like the cover art. How wrong was I, sorry guys, this cooks............... The first track Without Words is excellent guitar and keyboard interplay, loads of nice drop downs in sounds with the drums showing out at times, the progressives overtones dropping back to bring in a almost late nite jazz feel to this at times. 4 piece outfit from Ontario, say's that this is the third part of their previously unreleased trilogy ??????, making this the first part, well that's another tale. 8 tracks running in at over 60 minutes leave plenty of room for the band to explore their own style of progressive rock, I thought the first class guitar playing was up there with the likes of Steve Howe and Steve Hackett, but this has an alive feel to it, like the rawness that was offered by so many of the more obscure UK prog acts of the early seventies. The vocals, although there not at lot of them at times, are really strong and powerful, driving over the lowered sound to stretch out of the speaker and wrap themselves around you, keyboards that just explode and roar, funky bass lines; this has something for everyone. The second track and title track is excellent, not heard a stronger prog tunes for a while. The whole band play with passion and feeling, reminded me a little of the power IQ used to put into shows in the early 80's in some of the smaller clubs they played. Beyond the rim of despair is a more jazz based tune with a little Crimson feel to it, nice layered guitar sound on here that builds when the sax playing of Paul Desagne joins. Not really any week tracks at all, this is an excellent progressive rock release that will appeal across the spectrum of prog fans, both new and old alike, this really should be looked out for.
Melodic Energy Commission - Moon Phase Compendium (CA Vapor 97)
Hmmm, now here was band I had never heard of when this arrived on my door mat. Vancouver's most ever psychedelic explorers (so the sleeve notes say), now this MUST be worth a listen, so off I ran to my CD player opened the box, took out the little plastic disc, sat back relaxed tuned in and dropped out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. So the story goes anyway, well back to reality, on reading more about them, this is actually a compilation of two LP's from 79/80 having never come across this band before, I was shocked by the quality of there excellent blending of Psych with a not unlikable amount of spacefolk................. The mixing of female vocals, the fuzzed out guitars, the sound spectrum explored and the monstrous use of instruments, piano, bamboo, khaen, aura theramin, bells, tablas, the list just goes on and on. The 15 track (72 minutes), are pure experimental psych, some great touches of prog, a little folk, and little more spacerock, and the elements of any good hippie band make this a musical treat for anyone into good music. I missed this band first time around,( well I was only 18 and knew nothing anyway) but I am so glad this landed, REALLY LANDED on my door mat, a musical feast was had my me. If you like to experiment with your musical tastes, Cpt Beefhart and Gong, territory is a start, but these guys seem to take that further on into the mind, No Familiar Planets Tonight, Plight Of The Dodo, & Silver Spider give the game away , check there web site, where you will fall into a world where time didn't stand still, and no one ever answered the door when the bell rang.......
The Magic Elf - Elf tales ( US big shoe music 98)
Great debut from this excellent US trio, described in the bands press release as a INSTRUMENTAL CONCEPT, telling tales of elf's in elf land. Excellent playing a tight sound back this one of the most interesting debut I have heard for a long time. Check there own site for sounds and links, ordering info, and a musical delight!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OryZhein - Scalaria (CAN on 99)
Debut CD offering from French-Canadian neo-progressive band OryZhein. French vocals all the way on this one, at times giving it a very classic progressive sound (like the Italian bands of the 70's) lots of keys and guitar on this from the opening instrumental track of I'orage, followed by I'invasion a King Crimson sounding piece with a strong sax running though the final section. The following tracks all seam to fit well, the instrumentation is excellent, moving around and not standing still helps make the move along. The last track Ia parabole is for me the best track on the CD a strong powered track with excellent drums and guitar starting off before dropping down into a more acoustic section at the end. The only draw back for me would me the fact of the French vocals (sorry my French is not that good) overall an impressive debut, from a band worth keeping an eye on in the future. OH! There is an hidden Zappa / Crimson sounding track with English vocals right at the end that is worth waiting for (tracks 24!!!).
Firstly some background on this US duo, Plutonian Shore, are more of a musical envelope, once opened up, there is so much more to them than this CD release. Michael Dawson and Sean Mulligan make up this duo, based in California USA they seam to want to take instrumental music into the 21st century. They are involved not only with their own music, but also writing and recording music for the film industry. Sean Mulligan is the guitarist both bass, lead and rhythm, interested in science fiction, horror, and classical music this could only lead him into the world of modern instrumental music. Micheal Dawson the other half of this duo, is the keyboard and percussionist, he stared playing music at the age of 7, and has work along with Sean for over 12 years. Their shared interests in both music and literature has bought them to the point where they are now, for which in time I think will lead them both onto a major driving force of instrumental music.
Arcana (US Echelon 98)

Released in summer 98, this nearly 70 minute piece is very interesting, drawing on many influences from the sounds of Asia, to more modern progressive sound. There are and will be many comparisons made on this release, although this might seam unfair to the original sound, there are many boxes which this work might just clim into, NEWAGE , CLASSICAL, PROGRESSIVE , act's like Vangelis, bit's of Peter Gabriel, are just two to think of. Although I found this to be a more sustained musical journey more in the keeping of Classical pieces from time gone by. There is a direction here, not like some of the modern Newage releases you sometimes come across, which just seam to aim to get though the next 50 minute with out to much direction. Here we start with Harbinger which sets the tone, a dark start which quickly picks up to a more up tempo beat. The second track, although I feel there really is only one track on the CD, is The Golden Veil, a rhythmic offering which quickens and slow with ease for me. The following tracks all have their own feel to them, There are many ethnic roots based offerings with in this work, drawing I'm sure of the time and travel of both guys. The Mountains of Heaven for me is a stand out track, nice acoustic guitar and a dream like feeling though the work, which by mid section as quickened in to a more upbeat tempo. This CD is a first class offering, if you like Classical, it's here, Newage it's here, Progressive it's here, something for all to take time out to listen too.
I'm sure as more people become aware of the work of
Plutonian Shore
Their work load will increase. Both guys are first class musicians, they have an insight into modern instrumental music, which will delight the film industry and music buying public alike. These guys web site is a mind of information, and is a full time enjoyment on it's own, please go and visit them, and say hello................................
Natural Selections - (UK Cyclops 97)
Classic progressive rock from this US based band, this their fourth outing. This CD offers all elements that anyone into the progressive sense could hope for, just 6 tracks running over 73 minutes. The opening track is just over a minute long, which the leaves 5 tracks to fill over 70 minutes, we are left to be treated to a find blend of classic sounds with soaring guitar work, laid out keys and passive but powerful drums, the vocals are from Jeff McFarland which are just superb. I shall start by passing sentence over the last and titles track on the CD a 30 minute piece which start with acoustic Spanish guitar and drums with vocals coming into at a lower level which then build over the following few minutes, before arriving at a harder edged aggressive section. The guitar work here is excellent the keyboards flow. Some how I just feel the whole thing would have fitted on Marillion's "Clutching at straws". The four tracks that proceed this are all excellent if not a little too nice. All are first class modern progressive rock, and can't really be faulted, the forth track on the CD "An emptiness that never failed" an acoustic guitar based song where we get a short guitar solo in the middle, before falling away to finish with the sublime vocal arrangements, which runs right over into "my home"(track 5) a 10 minute prog builder. If you like acts such as Marillion, IQ, Pink Floyd, and more there will be something here to warrant you finding this one in your local record store.
Drainage - (UK Cyclops 98)
A live collection of songs, recorded in Mexico in 97, from their previous release, and a couple of previously unreleased songs left of the above release. First track "natural reflection" was the opener for the above CD as was left out due to time restriction, which I'm sure this band aim to fill every minute of disc space, a dreamy mostly instrumental piece of guitar and keys, sorry but I just can't help feeling Marillion walking though the door again here. The other 9 tracks that fill this release are all high quality progressive tunes, which I'm sure will please most, the musicians, are excellent, and are worthy of been regarded as one of the leading progressive acts around right now. The songs tight and played with passion and feelings, especially the epic 17 minute plus "love though the winter" a classic atmospheric song. It's been a while since I heard such a tight band, well crafted songs and strong playing make for a true progressive fans dream, This I would make as a starting point for the band, from here I'm sure you can head backwards into their previous releases.
Francis Monkman - 21st Century blues (UK private 99)
Just issued privately pressed CD from former Curved Air and Sky keyboard player. All of this release seams to be self penned and self worked. From the opening 9 minute track POISONALITY, which is a full blooded progressive tune, with some great guitar (Michael Gore) work inside it. The rest of this release is taken up mixing in track which are a little more blues/pop based, even sounding a little Chris Rea (21 bar-blues) at times. 14 tracks which fill nearly 80 minutes offer value for money. For me the better tracks are the longer worked track of which two run to over 9 minutes, and the last but one track DISPOSSESION BLUES, another excellent progressive style track with distorted voice my favorite track on the release. Last track is Iftruth a more laid back blues number again thought of Chris Rea came to mind. I didn't find this an easy listen, but I'm sure if you are a fan of Francis previous works ( which I knew very little about ) then this will appeal to you, if you like a mix of blues and progressive rock, then I would say check out the web site, which right now seams the only place you can buy this CD.
Loomer - World tipped blue ( CD ee002 ) Evil Eye have a real winner here. A excellent blend of low edged pop. Great female vocals with blissful harmonies make this a great release for anyone who into the darker end of pop psych, whirling guitars, a monster bass line, that just adds a very REAL feel all the way though.
Jaye Foucher - Infectious Licks (US fuism 97 )
Female Rock & Roll guitar heros don't come along that often, but here in this debut release Jaye, sees herself pushing to be in the foreground of rock guitar based offerings. This 10 track debut, see a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks, all self penned byJaye. The strong guitar leads will no doubt draw reference to "Joe Satriani" but with backing from Luis Espaillat on bass and Justin Pacy on drums, sees this CD power its way though all 10 tracks. With a mix of jazz and rock, with elements from around the musical spectrum, I'm sure this release will appeal to all guitar fans. Jaye web site is well worth checking out, You will find more information and ordering details.
Andrew McCutcheon - Out of the lions mouth (US plummeat 98 )
5 track 20 minutes plus of pure psychedelic/folk-rap heaven!. Recorded my himself last year, this is he's 1st release on his own record label. This is what can only be seen as a "real people music" , blending the garage beliefs of the 6T's American underground music scene, with a feel for modern life.Mixing spoken word and songs into one, and with some of the best organ I've heard for a long time, these five tracks move with ease from the opening of "out of the mouth" to the last notes of "taste of your heart", a full 20 minutes of musical fun is had. Sounding not unlike the DOORS at times, mixing in the attitude of Frank Zappa, I'm sure this going to appeal to fans from a wide musical spectrum. If your looking for something a little different , go and check out Andrew own site, where you you can listen in peace and take a trip into the bargain, for which the price is only $5.
Greg Panfile - Resolution or bits of the late great twentieth century (US 97 private)
What a title, thought I might as well sat down and read a book. But seriously this is worth listening to, a great mix of rock-pop tracks from the opening EVERYBODY'S GOT A HABIT a up-beat bluesy(!) number with a strong guitar riff, and powerful vocals. Followed by the more acoustic LOVE IS AROUND. The fine blend of the 12 tracks work well, this is sure to appeal to people who like mainstream rock, but has enough of a edge to entertain music lover from around the spectrum. The french language ACADLE is just great, a up lifting song, which is sure to get feet tapping. The best tracks for me was LIKE A DREAM a excellent ballad and with CONCENTRATED been a powered rock number. Forget trying to fit this one into a musical box, just listen and enjoy.
Folkcorn- Jan de Mulder ( HOL clipsound 97 )
Recent issue from long running Dutch medieval folk band, a excellent mix of male & female vocals, and a strong use of many instruments. This 20 track release issued by the band though "pink records", mixes both instrumentals and vocal track, all are well crafted and based on original medieval songs, The band can be contacted at,:
Churchillweg 41, 6707 FB, wegeningen, Holland.
THE LIVING ROOM - CHAMBERS ( GER PRIVATE 97 )
1st l.p issued by this new German outfit, 6 piece band, 4 guys 2 girls they issued this private release late last year. Pressed in a ltd edtion of just 500 copies, in silkscreen printed sleeve, and Pressed on 220g.m vinyl.excellent late sixties US styled psych, A mix of male and female vocals, the stand out tracks for me are, "VELVET SHADOWS" ;"JUST A LITTLE SONG" With some excellent west coast sounding guitar work, and GRACE SLICK alike vocals. You can contact the band at: INSELSTRABE 52: 28207 BREMEN : GERMANY
KAI THE GUITARIST who will let you have more details.
IZZ - Silver of a sun (UK private 99)
Intriguing US `band with a large debt to progressive rock, but with wide eyes on a more mainstream market. The tracks are a mix, a jazz, rock, progressive touches, nice acoustic guitar work and more. 11 tracks that fill nearly an hour of music. The band have 5 members but also call on the help of others, including some great female backing vocals The only thing I'd say against this is I found the running order to be less than easy. From the polite Take me higher, next you get the intense Double Bass, then onto Just a Girl, a track that would fill most middle America radio airwaves on a summer day. On the whole I found I'd enjoyed this, but if the band are to find a major market for their music, taking the music in one musical direction would benefit them, the moving around of styles had for me run out of steam by the end of this..
IO - Strange tales from the urban circles (Cn dragonfly 99)
Some music just doesn't do it for me, the first listen to this, for some reason passed over me without thought. Then while driving home late one nite, this tune, popped into my head, I was unsure what it was, then by the time I'd got back, I knew, the 2nd track from this release, Satellites, a powerful rock tune. So it was back to giving this one a second chance. Mixing the vocals of Tim Foley and Stephanie Sheri, this 11 track release is very much fixed into mainstream rock market. The mix of heavier and lighter weight power pop/rock based songs is going to gain this band a lot of radio air play around the world. For me to pick a couple of tracks to stand the crowd, I go for Reverie and Here Now, both excellent ballad style numbers fronted by the voice of Stephanie Sheri.
Patrick Broguiere - Mont Saint Michel (It Mellow records 98)
I know this one runs to a little old now, but I thought I'd drop it in. A French electronic composer, who with this his latest release use's a wider range of instruments to get over the point. This is a concept CD telling the tale of a French chapel built in honor of the Saint Michel. Instrumentation here include, violin, viola, sax along with key's and electric guitar and bass.. The vocals, although sparse are mostly in the choral/chant direction which fit's nicely into the surrounding. The CD cover art is excellent, and set's the feel for a journey back to the middle ages. The mixing of classical progressive rock with a medieval/renaissance sound works well and gives an impressive listen. This release is going to find friends from newage/modern classical/and progressive rock followers alike. I could now go on to list a number of similar sounding recording, I feel this would not do justice to this piece, if like me you are always looking for a new sound to listen too, and not looking for a outright sound BLAST, then this might just do (MJ)
Icones - (Fr musea 96) Previous work by Patrick which I found to be more in the keeping of the electronic scene. Another concept release, which moves along with great easy. Some vocals (well more over talk) fit well onto the sound track. A interesting a accessible listen to most, again a wide use of flute, violin, keys, electric guitar and more. Oldfield and Jarre fans should look out for this one.
Cage - Unveiled (Ger OMEGA 99)
Recent debut CD from San Diego based metal band. 15 tracks, 53 minutes long, see this power piece hit full force from the off. Very little time is spared trying to build or layer any tracks, what you get is honest upfront metal. In the world of metal there are some many different forms, you seam to get caught up it a web of "progressive speed thrash metal", here from the opening of Shoot to Kill, we get a more stripped down form of pure Heavy Metal. Bands from the early 80's UK metal scene would be proud of the fact, bands like Cage have taken the idea's a step further, giving us Heavy Metal for the millennium. I remember going to see bands like Judas priest, Saxon, when I was just a boy (OK 18), and not since then has a metal release impressed me like this, I found the sound running around inside my head hours later. There is not point in trying to pin down where this band find the passion to play like this. The songs are tight, maybe years of touring and support act slots, have left there mark.
Dyslesia - My Own Revololution (Fr brennus 99)
French release from melodic metal outfit. 10 tracks with nearly an hour of running time. The opening bars of Intro (track 1), set's a feeling to this release that will be fulfilled. The extremely powerful vocal talents of Thierry Lebourg, are excellent, He has the power to cover all aspect of metal today, from the heavier ground on Lights and Dreams to my favorite track, the Melodic Bad Memories (almost a metal version of IQ). I found plenty of scope , enough to keep most rock fans happy. The band quote Queensryche and Helloween as influences on them, sure there is enough here to go in that direction, but DYSLESIA, are individual enough to make you want to learn more about them. Issued on the Metal arm of French label MUSEA, which is where I'm sure the the high level of expectation comes from here.
The world of metal/prog metal/speed metal and more, seam to get cloudier by the day, to find releases to stand out from the field is no small task, OMEGA RECORDS (their are handling DYSLESIA press) Have done so with both of these.
Archetype - Hands 0f Time (US/DEN imp 99)
Mini CD release from 4 piece Ohio based progressive metal act. Released back in February of this year (1999). This 22 minute CD is enough time for the band to get over their brand of power metal without drawing the point out. I'm no great lover of this sound, but for once with this release, I saw how a band had taken the time to work at the songs. The one thing that stood out for me here, was the voice of Chyle Vagner, who used his high and low range to breed life into these tracks. I enjoyed all the tracks, but to pick a stand out one for me, we'd have to go with the title track, a short a powerful song, without the harsh vocal aggression you get with so many power metal bands.
Pierre Bensusan - Nice Felling (US zebra 99)
What we get here is a collection of instrumental acoustic guitar tunes from the last 20 years. Played with a style where you would need to look hard to find better. The songs are strong, thought out, and played with passion. Collected from he's previous 6 releases, this forms what could be seen as a "greatest hits". I had never come across the work of Pierre pervious to this, the original releases been on Rounder Records. I found, on the whole, these 18 tracks to be most enjoyable, although not usually my choice of home listing. The press releases says file under FOLK, cross file in NEWAGE WORLD, for me there would be no argument here, as I'm sure all lovers of these genre's would find something to appeal to there musical needs. (MJ)
Forgotton Suns - Fiction Edge ( DEMO CD'R 99)
The thought of a Marillion tribute band filled my mind when I picked this up. Although fixed into the progressive rock field with a heavy mix of guitar and keyboards these 5 tracks are from the lighter end of progressive metal, or the heavier end of AOR. A fine demo which has only wet the taste buds for the finish CD. If you are into the heavier side of melodic rock, progressive metal then this is a band to keep a watch on over the next year. The stand out track for me was Routine which did have a feel of a heavier version of Marillion circa, Clutching at straws. A big production sound only for me, added to the appeal.
Inner Resonance - Solar Voices (US dr 99)
This debut CD from us duo Inner Resonance, had me a little worried, for some reason over the last few week's with the amount of so called "progressive metal" hitting my desk. I had become bored with it. Same tunes, different lyrics. That's all I could think. I'd come across work by one half of this duo before, Jeff Smoots, He's JRS-wings of gold CD from last year had not gone a miss. So he was back this time, doing mostly the music on this release and using Peter Orulian for voice and keys. So as I hit the play button, was I in for another hour of of what I had come to start to dislike, I was hoping not. And with this I got a change. So this is what we all have come to understand as "progressive metal", but here with have tunes that are worked out played with great expertise. I thought we might be in for Steve Perry alike vocals, god knows why, but I did, again I was off the mark. Peter Orullian vocal range is quite stunning, from the harder end sound he can move with pleasure into more gentle, almost classical sound. From reading the bio, he has spent much time, on working on his voice. The music fit's he's voice well, the obvious choice of stadium rock comes to the fore, and with so many bands around pushing for a share of the sunlight in this field, I guess it's going to hard work here for Inner Resonance. The tracks fit well in to each other. The guitar playing is quite a thrill with out been over the top, lots of elements of keys/guitar interplay fitted in, and longer instrumental passages were here too. Tracks for note are, Title track, Solar Voices, a melodic tunes that builds over the vocals, One more Summer, a 9 minute epic, that is full of the progressive sound of the 90's, and final track The Drum, a 10 minute classic progressive tune. The musicianship of Jeff Smoots, can not be in question, he as the ability to play a wide number of instruments. The vocal's of Peter Orullian, are as good as I have heard for a while now. If this CD is to break into the more mainstream market, only time will tell. But with the right exposure, I'm sure Inner Resonance could score some major success with the rock fraternity
Group Therapy - Atlantis ( JP mellow 99)
Debut CD from this Japanese's band that first got together over 10 years ago. Main stay, and band leader is Hiroyuki Kitada, composer and lead guitarist. Group Therapy play a complex blend of mondern instrumental Jazz Fusion ( is not all jazz fusion complex?). The rest of the band is made up of 6 other members, including Matthew Osborne a Englishman playing 6 string bass The music is a blend of rock and traditional jazz ideas. 6 tracks that run in at 44 minutes, with the last and title track been 14 minutes plus. The wide use of the Sax and Trombone gives the full jazz flavor. The playing of the band is tight and complex they are, and the tunes have a full sound order, something I find missing from jazz at times. This is very much modern jazz, for modern jazz audiences.
Electric Bird Noise - unleashing the inner robot (US artfag 97)
US trio EBN offer a interesting blending of modern instrumental music. Combining the use of electric guitars, bass , drums, loop effects, and more. A sort of post industrial pop!!!!!!!!. The use of a beatbox gives a full dimension of sound. Opening with the aggressive NUMBER FOUR, then followed by the more mellow landscape piece LAZY TUMBLEWEEDS ( which would have fitted nicely into the soundtrack for a modern western ), the following 8 tracks all take on there very own style and direction. NUMBER THREE been a more mainstream guitar piece, with layered sound and full use of the instrumentation. Final track is the more sublime HOLDIN BACK THE TEARS, this contemporary piece has the sound of some of the more obscure releases from the UK 80's electronic scene. On the whole this debut CD is a pleasant surprise of and flowing sounds, that at time stand out and hit you. If you like soundscapes and feel the need to find something a little more intriguing then I recommend finding this one.
Halliard & Jon Raven : Mike Raven & Joan Mills with Saga : Black Country Three with Nic Jones
Jolly Machine & more ( Private 97 UK)
Now here is what can only be a welcome re-issue for anyone looking to collect some of the more obscure pieces from the UK folk scene. A collection of two Vinyl LP's and three tracks from BC3, Firstly the Hallairds and Jon Raven, these tracks are from the privately pressed 1968 LP, which was recorded and pressed for the farewell tour of the Halliard, who had played the UK folk clubs of the late sixties, just 99 copies were pressed at the time, and with very few ever arriving on the collectors market, this release gives the chance for more people to listen to this fine set of traditional folk. Although missing out two solo Jon Raven tracks from the original release, it does include the 1973 reworking of the Haillards Lancashire lads, recorded by Jon & Nic Jones( Hallairds). The issuing on the Mike Raven & Joan Mills JOLLY MACHINE can only been seen as a blessing for anyone who collects UK female vocal folk, Backed by UK folk band SAGA, and issued on the small UK folk label FOLK HERITAGE in 1974, having been transferred from vinyl, due to the lost masters, without any serious loss in sound or production. As with original vinyl copies changing hands at over £200, this is excellent chance for anyone who just wants to hear how good the mid-seventies folk scene in the UK was. The excellent playing and sweet sounding vocals of Joan Mills stand out, and sounds as fresh today, as I'm sure it did in 1974. The three other tracks that finish of this release, are from the BC3, who were both the Raven brothers along with Derek Craft, who in the mid-sixties issued just two release, their 1966 LP for Transatlantic, and their private issued EP, on there own label, two tracks are drawn from the LP, and the final track of the CD been Dudley Canel song, taken from the EP ( which if a copy was to ever get onto the collecting scene would sure to cause a ripple of excitement for collectors). This CD is a fine introduction into the Raven collecting family tree, which would take a full page on it's own to write. The putting together of these tracks is a reflection, or maybe just an introduction to the works of Mike & Jon Raven, be it just the tip of the iceberg of their output, and the inclusion of the reworked tracks, shows how years after the original releases, they still sound fresh, if you are looking to find out more about the brothers here is as good a place as any to start. Pressed in just a 500 edition this time, I'm sure this will become sort after by collectors and lovers of UK folk alike. The CD book is cramped with information about the recording, and the artists, along with excellent artwork, is a real treat. Only available direct from Mollie Music, and selling quickly I would recommend you act fast to get a copy.

Angstrom - Real Virtuality (UK private 99)

Fronted by Gwenda Wood, Angstrom are a 7 piece band. They play a blend of Heavy prog with some great psych/spacerock overtones, but not as dated as you would expect from such a sound. I could list a number of acts that sound alike, but this as a great fresh music feel to it. Formed in 1990 and splitting in 1995, Angstrom reformed in 97, and played live later that year. This is where most of the track on this release come from. The first three tracks were recorded in the studio, the following 7 live on the 22nd November 1997. The first tracks are well crafted and put together well, the vocals and guitar playing are the obvious main points here. Gwenda Wood's vocal's are strong, if not a little raw at times but with a powerful range to them. The best of these 3 for me was "August dawn" a more sublime tune that build's well. The following tracks are now live, and gives a run though of the sound of Angstrom, a live energetic set that's power's from one track to the other. "Pin down" is a kiss ass tune. All the tracks here are self penned and unrestricted, which shows this band aim to play what they want too. The track for me from the live section has to be "Spirit of ecstasy", a atmospheric tune with some great guitar work over the low end of Gwenda Wood's voice, and the longest track at just over six minutes. Angstrom are working on a new EP which is due out soon, if your looking for a raw edged rock thrill, I feel Angstrom have it.
DJAM KARET-------"STILL NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL"
A surprising c.d. this. I was fully expecting the usual prog-rock clichés. You now the thing, totally unnecessary time changes, lyrics about small elves waging eternal war against each other. How wrong I was! The disc begins with a guitar driven piece of Krautish-rock enthused with an experimental edge. These people aren't afraid to use sounds and textures that are new. We then get into a more reflective mood with a percussion led piece. The disc continues with 6 tracks, in all, of 'Digitally Recorded Instrumental Music'. Delving at times into quite 'out there' territory. The thing that really makes me stop and think is that this c.d. is claimed to be improvised and recorded on a single microphone. Thanks to or even in spite of this the sound is perfect and as someone who has tried to record bands live it really makes me marvel. I'm sure that the band are heartily sick of the comparison but some of the music makes me think of the Grateful Dead. Not because it sounds like them but the feel is very similar. Spacey instrumental music that is a pleasure to listen to. The drumming also brings to mind Can in their more together moods. This is obviously a band that is very together and knows each others styles and skills. For an improvised set of tracks it falls into none of the pitfalls that are possible. The songs are all of a sensible length and even the use of a didgeridoo is blended in well (shame about the farting noises tho'). I'm sorry that I've had to use comparisons to other bands in this review. I know it's something that I for one have been criticised for but sometimes it's the only way to describe something . At least by referencing other artists the reader can tell more or less the type of music that is being spoken about. There is nothing as annoying as a review that drones on for ages about bugger all to do with the band in question. There, I've droned on for long enough myself! I recommend this c.d. I enjoyed listening to it . Go buy it, Go see the band.
Steve Adams - Maiden Voyage (US private 98)
Debut CD from long standing guitarist, formally with PETE BARDENS MIRAGE for the last few years, Steve offers this guitar based CD mixing jazz / rock / classical styles with a mixture of instrumental and vocal tracks. This 10 track release have been wrote / produced / mixed, with most of the instrument played by Steve. If you are interested in guitar based "progressive" piece's then this is worth looking out for. On Steve's own site, you will find out more information on this release and all on Steve's other collaboration Hush.
Ashland - Demo (US demo CD'r 99)
5 tracks demo sampler, that gives us a insight into 4 piece Washington based band ASHLAND. Their will be obvious comparison drawn to this band, and the leading one has to be RUSH. I always try and listen to a band, before I read anything about them, and here after reading the bio, found other saying the same things. Powerful tunes, high class musicianship, strong vocals, tightly played. I'm sure once they get their first full release they will start to get the exposure they deserve. 5 great power rock tunes with a leaning on progressive rock.
Alaska - Same (US lifescape 98)
US progressive rock duo, Alaska power there way though this 11 track release, not stopping for one minute they push as hard as any full band would. If I had not read the press release with this I would never had guessed that Alaska were just, Al Lewis and John O'Hara, Keys, guitars , drums, but no bass, which I never missed it. Alaska play a complex blend of of progressive rock, with a strong YES feel at times, which for me only added too the enjoyment. With two tracks clocking in at over 11 minutes plus, and others pushing 8 minutes plus. If your into progressive sounds, this is well worth checking out.
ALL Too Human - Forever and a Day ( US r/r 98 )
Excellent self financed debut offering from Texas based progressive metal 4 piece band. Running for just over 46 minutes ( this for me was the only disappointment ), this debut offering mixes all the classic elements from bands such as Rush/Queensryche , from the opening guitars riffs to the more melodic/acoustic pieces , with not a single week track insight. The strong vocals of Paul Vander are held up with what is some of the best musicianship I've herd from an unsigned band ( I did ask myself , for how much longer this would be). The top flight guitar playing from Chris Mcluan and the strong bass line from Maurice Taylor, finished off with the drums of Chris Lucci. From the heavier opening track of "what do you call me now" to the more acoustic " souls on a mrtal high" to the instrumental "a walk though Iowa park" all tracks mix and fit well together. If you get off on the heavier side of progressive rock, then I would recommend you visit there own web site, there's more info on the band, contact details and order information.
" GREEN MIDNIGHT GLOW" (US st 97)
Welcome to the bat infested and cobwebbed world of "Neo-Goth". The Babylonian Tiles led by self proclaimed "Hip Death Goddess" Byrna Golden plot a meandering path through this dark land. Doors style organ and suitably psychy guitars back up a strangely compelling vocal which are oddly reminiscent of the lo-fi twitterings of U.K. groups such as Pram or Broadcast. It strikes me that this, musically, speaking, is much more psychedelia than Gothic rock although its lyrical content is firmly in gothville with its references to death, dreams, candles and other things connected with the dark side. This disc with its proggy and garagey leaning would appeal to a lot of people if they can get past its Gothic rock trappings.
BABYLONIAN TILES - "BASKING IN THE SUN AT MIDNIGHT"(US st 94)
"Ooh mummy, its those frightening Goths again Tell the scary people to go away."
"Fear not my tremulous child it's only those American Neo-Goths Babylonian Tiles again and their bark is much worse than their bite"
Dubt release from B.T sound's a little more contemporary, sort of like Hawkwind meets Siouxsie with an 80`s/90`s indie attitude. Having said that tracks such as "Never Growing Old" have a scuzzy garage feel to them. Clearly the band isn't afraid to wear its influences on its purple velvet and lace cuff. There is a clear link in musical terms to the glory days of Sisters refugees The Mission although the B.T`s don't come on quite as bombastically. To be listened to in the dead of night
SAINTS AND SORCERER'S - Volume 2 (US st 98)
A 16 track compilation from Saint Thomas Records, home of the Babylonian Tiles (see above), representing all that is the best in the Goth/darkwave genre. This compilation ranges from the quite good to the absolutely bloody dire. Praise of Folly have an early 80`s British feel to them, a bit like the Sisters of Mercy or the Nephilim. Several of the bands put down atmospheric tracks like the New York Room's French track and both the Mr Presto tracks. My money for stars of the show go to Detroit Industrialists DeLien with their sample driven track "lost belief" very much like Cabaret Voltaire.Next in the honours list is Vampire Nation who is apparently a 500 year old vampire (still he looks good on it). Booby prize goes to Cruciform or Demian Dorrance, as his Mum and the girl on the make-up counter know him at his local shop. His "unique arrangement of a traditional hymm(sic) from the high middle ages" is quite simply as scary and gothic as Cousin It from the Adams Family. Added to the fact that he looks like a participant on an episode of the Jerry Springer Show this track is laughable. With the notable exception this c.d. is probably a good introduction to the field of American Darkwave artists and may throw up names that are worth tracking down.
@ Mr Cris Baldwin
One of the better US progressive labels around right now, follow the above link for reviews and a link to their own site.
Swiss based progressive rock label, loads of great reissues and home of the excellent
STARGLOW ENERGY
Dear Earnest - Mooch: In search of the acid metal grille
( UK dern 98 )
Recently issued progressive trance piece from Scottish 4 piece. Lots of layered keys and nice programmed section with use of keyboard/Guitars/Drums. Just 4 long tracks that span nearly 70 minutes, with 3 tracks clocking in at around the 20 minute mark. If you are into bands like the Orb and system 7, this is sure to appeal, so will it to any NEWAGE fans that might like some of the more dreamscape, experimental sections. I'm sure this would look and sound great live……………………………
The Flake - Psychedelaction (German private 98)
WoW!, stunning 4 track release from this German outfit, 3 guys and two girls, with female vocals. From the opening roaring organ of "Scream out" the flake take you back to the late sixties with these four unashamed "POP PSYCH" tracks. Listing UK acts as THE SMALL FACES, THE ACTION, and THE ATTACK as influences on there music, to which there is doubt on the second track "Groovy monday", and the darker edged "Too many people" If you can imagine the B52's recording in London in late 1967, this is where The Flake are at . If you get of on sixties sounding bands, and girl vocals this will become a must for you. The excellent groovy organ gives the full psychedelic TRIP. The only shame here is the CD has only 4 tracks, but I will wait with much anticipation for a full length release from them. Check out there own web site for a total FLAKE experience.
Finneus Gauge - One inch of the fall (US train records 99)
Now for some reason this had laid around on my desk for a few weeks, and when I finally got round to popping it in the player I was a little shocked to realize what I'd been missing. This is the second offering from this band, has I have not heard the first, I'm unable to speak on that front. But this is strong, female vocals from Laura Martin, the other four members hold onto a tight neo-prog set. Has all the right moves, guitars, keys and more. Very much in King Crimson territory at times, this is not a easy 70 minutes. The listener has to pay attention, not one for "background music", complex passages and interesting lyrical content makes you look a little further into the songs. 8 tracks that have the same feel running though them. Progressive rock fans, you'll love this..................
DEATHWATCH BEETLE REPAIRMAN-"Hollow Fishes" (US private 99)
A c.d. of very cinematic music from Canada's Deathwatch beetle Repairman. The first track went off in a very Twin Peaks /Angelo Badalamenti direction. The initial sounds however had me running for my c.d. player fearing it was broken, due to the very odd assortment of sounds that were emanating from the speakers, that, however, is not a criticism. The vocals seem to suggest a sort of gothic Scott Walker, which again is not a criticism. Track 5 includes some nice tabla and guitar sounds; indeed the whole of this c.d. is put together with skill and style. A feeling of darkness is very apparent throughout this c.d. and is even more effective when you consider some US bands efforts to be spooky and gothic just end up in a ridiculous farce. A large debt has to be acknowledged to the Velvet Underground in the execution of some of the more drone like tracks, Hints of John Cales electric Viola can almost be detected hovering ghostlike above some of the tracks. For me "king of the Rooks "is the stand out track with its eastern tinged air of menace and foreboding, Darkly recommended.

Death and Taxes - Paradigms for a new Quater..(US oar 99)
American group "DEATH & TAXES" come on all modern metal, shiny guitar runs, punchy drums and they're not afraid to rock out i.e. "Invisible Man " track 4 on this c.d. They then try to meld the sensibilities of a thrash metal band with the virtuosity of a band such as King Crimson .The bassist even plays a Chapman stick which adds to the feeling that there are about 23 different bands represented in this group, all trying to get out and have their 5 minutes. Perhaps this is the sound for the next millennium: Progressive-Thrash-Jazz-Speed metal. In all fairness though, the band have a very tight competent sound and the c.d. is a success, the different stylings and unusual instrumentation kept my interest where most modern "Rock" bands fail, the accompanying press release make a point of mentioning their improvisational abilities, I`d like to hear a live set by this band.
Discipline-unfolded like staircase (US srung out records 1997)
Discipline are a progressive rock band. There is no doubt to this at all, they play a complex blend of prog rock, mixing 70's beliefs with a 90's style. Just four long tracks on this CD, moving between long instrumental section to the angry vocal on the opening track of "Canto IV", to the more flowing section on "Into the dream". Complex keys and layered guitars remind me of Fish era Marillion at times. This is sure to be one of the stand out progressive CD's of the last few years.............
Glass Eden - Same (US reality 97)
US based rock band Glass Eden , are destined for big things on the strength of this recording. Total confident in what they do, offering a strong blend of the heavier side of rock music, not metal but with a feel of metallica, Glass Eden can and do, move onto the more melodic side of things with ease. With the oblivious comparisons to such bands as NIN and Marilyn Manson, doing the band no justice at all. Glass Eden ARE going to be a major name in the rock world, if you like you music with a a strong feel and a little attitude, GLASS EDEN is the name.........
Galahad - De construduting Ghosts (UK av 99)
Now this worried me a bit, I'd really enjoyed last years acclaimed "FOLLOWING GHOSTS" and as I read the press release, that this was Re-Mixes!!!, Prog goes DANCE, but not this was not to be. They have taken the vocal tracks and mixed then up, worked in some dance/drum and bass, and come up with a interesting mix. There is still the proggy bits, and there's more, the beats work well, for a out and out "prog-man", I enjoyed this, I was put off big time by the thought of this, and in the end enjoyed it some what, if you are looking for a new neo-prog thrill, I'd pass, if u want to try something new from a band you like, it's worth a listen.
Galahad - Following ghosts ( UK Avalon July 98 )
Just issued new 11 track CD from this long running UK act, unashamed for been prog, they have taken a slightly new direction on this release. Opening track "MYOPIA" is almost speed metal at times, but keeping it's prog overtones, Followed my "IMAGO", a more traditional rock ballad. Track 3 "A SHORT REFLECTION ON TWO PAST LIVES pt1" see's Galahad in a more folky mood. With two tracks running in at over 14 minutes each, both "BUG EYE" and "SHINE", with the later been for me the stand out track, will keep all prog fans happy, but also I'm sure this will appeal to a wider audience. From the eastern opening sounds of "PERFECTION PERSONIFIED" to the classical arranged instrumental "REJUVENATION" and onto the more upbeat sounds of "OCEAN BLUE" , running in at over 73 minutes long, making this a true CLASSIC ROCK l.p. If you are already a fan of this band, then I'm sure this will become a must have, if not then I would recommend tracking this one down. The band have there own site with loads of sound samples and ordering info.
Julius Bucsis - For those who don't fit in( US NoNiche music 97 )
Instrumental guitar based offering from US guy who has been playing guitar for more than 20 years. This release mixes lots of different styles, from rock to jazz to classical and back again, a complete fusion of styles here. 12 original tracks, with fine guitar playing mixed with sequenced backing, which makes for a very enjoyable listen.
Anubis Spire - Old lions [in the world of snarling sheep]( US PRIVATE 98 )
Debut CD only issue from this 4 piece NY based heavy prog/psych guitar driven band with a strong eastern vibe . Long tracks and with over 65mins running time, makes this an excellent debut. Bill MacKechnie lead's the band on guitar and vocals, on this mostly instrumental outing, wild guitar parts and strong band sound making this one of the best I've heard for a long time. Opening track "So be it" cooks all the way with thundering guitar work, other excellent tracks are "Road to Damascus" and "Amida rising", with "Talisman of the dreamer" a more melodic track with great vocals, if your a fan of guitar rock this ones worth tracking down. Bill has he's own web site with lots of links/info and real audio.......................
Johnny Asia - Guitarist from the future (US private 98)
Tape only release from this US guy, who recorded this in a two hour recording session, with no overdubs or editing. Side one opens with two acoustic tracks "Himalayan Sunrise" & "Blues from the future", the other 5 pieces played on electric guitar using digital delay. All tracks have a aerial feel at times, with musical comparison bound to be drawn to the likes of "John McLaughlin", and with sitar sounding guitars, the sound of "Ravi Shankar" is also felt. If you are a fan of guitar music, then I would recommend you take time to listen to the sound of Johnny Asia, his own site contains many sound files, where I'm sure you will find something to interest you.
Steve Cochrane - The purest of designs (Ca sprit compass 98)
Third CD release from this Canadian composer and musician. Steve has been releasing his own work since the early 90's, This a 5 track multi instrument release, with the semi-autobiographical Songs for spring running in at over 27 minutes. The first track To the glory of man,a instrumental track that is full of bold keyboard/guitars. This offering sets the tone for this CD. Next is the excellent When music speak, a well constructed piece with backing vocals from Marie Bodine. Then comes the epic (7 part) Songs of spring, telling the tail of a child artist struggle for artistic merit. Layered guitars and keyboards, long passages, excellent times changes, making this a excellent Camel/BJH sounding offering at times, with vocal's that I found to be not unlike Ian Anderson. Dreams of reason is a little more folky in it's direction. The last track is The promise of music, at 15 minute instrumental track, that opens with acoustic guitar, then builds in the middle section to a storm of guitar and keyboards, before falling away towards the end with an excellent dreamscape feel, before a finally flourish of guitars. If Steve Hackett and the likes of appeal to you then I would recommend a trip to Steve own site, you will find full ordering details, and more information about this and his previous work.
Ice Age - The great divide (US MC 99)
Progressive metal, I am starting to dislike this musical term. I find that a lot of the bands that now aim for this side of the market do so, out of the knowledge that "at least it will sell X amount of copies". So when I received this CD I was not looking forward to another hour of raged guitars and pounding beats. The CD sets off at a speed that put me right off. Far too fast for my taste. The opening track is the 10 minute title track. The following tracks are very much the same vein although we do get some pleasant changes at times. The rest of the CD is made up of a good mix of 4/5 minute tracks, with the odd 11 minute epic too. For me the best and last track been "To Say Goodbye" this did try and move away from those pounding beats and move in a direction I liked. I'm sure if you are a fan off i this style of music, hard guitar rock, with a moutain production, then this will appeal to you. The vocals and musicianship are excellent. It's just that, I'd heard it all before.
