Action Day

Action Day, 14th June 2000

Wednesday 14th June 2000 -. Many groups from over the UK, who considered the planning controls on mast location to be inadequate, were in attendance on this day in London and they made a big impression with their banners and posters. Both news channels in London and the South East covered the story, as well as many other local news and radio stations.

There were over 13,500 signatures collected on a petition from UK wide groups, which were presented by the children at 1.00 pm., to 10 Downing St. There were also letters from children across the UK, asking the Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair to remove masts from their schools and near their homes. After presenting the petitions to No. 10, the people went in an orderly manner on to the House of Commons to lobby their MP's, to support the Early day Motions by Phil Willis MP and others, which call for the findings of the recently published Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones and Masts, to be adopted.

The Wednesday chosen was a particularly good day for this, the weather was fine and many MP's where in attendance in the House for Prime Ministers Question Time. The group's certainly made there presence known, receiving support from passing people, outside Downing Street and at the House of Commons. The event was conducted in a peaceful manner both inside and outside the House of Commons. Many of the people managed to talk with their respective MP's, some were sympathetic and willing to help, others were not, but at least the point was made to their ELECTED representatives.

It was a long day for most, with travel from all over the UK, but one which proved an education for the children as well as a fruitful and positive one in making a strong point at the Heart of Democracy. It reinforced the knowledge that people are not alone in this fight and together they can make the Government and the Mobile Phone industry take notice.
