EDWARD LEWTAS AND MARY BANKS of POULTON
Edward Lewtas was born on June 25th and christened on 5th August 1798
He was the son of George and Mary Banks and had 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
Edward became a successful joiner and cabinet maker with premises on
the Breck. Edward obviously found plenty of work
in the community; it was a period of building in Poulton - for example
his name appears in the financial records of the Independent Chapel
in Poulton Edward made sure that his sons followed
in his trade - each of the five sons was, in his turn, apprenticed
as a joiner to his father.
Edward's
siblings
His sister Jane married William Hodgson and his sister Ellen
married William's brother John Hodgson
His sister Catherine married Richard Seed of Poulton
His sister Mary married George Greenwood of Liverpool
His sister Margaret married James Boardman a merchant of
Liverpool
His brother Thomas married Mary Wilding and became a surgeon in Liverpool
Edward married Mary Threlfall on April 1st 1818 in St Chad’s.
Mary – or Molly - Threlfall was the daughter of William Threlfall
of Newton with Staining yeoman and his wife Ann. She was born Oct
17th christened Nov 18th 1798.
The Threlfall children, brothers and sisters of Mary were:
Isabel 12th Sept 1793,
John 21st Nov 1794
Mary herself, Nov 18th 1798
James March 13th 1801
Richard Sept 1st 1803 and
William 13th July 1806
Edward and Mary had at least eleven children.
Ann was the eldest child, baptised on September 25th
1818 in St Chad's just five months after her parents' marriage. She die
early as another Ann was baptised in 1830.
George, aged 20 in the 1841 census was a joiner and presumably
was born around 1820 - no record has yet been found of his baptism
in St Chad's. George Lewtas married Jane Whittaker in 1846
in Blackpool. He moved away from Poulton and in the 1851 census
was married with three daughters, living in Hacking Street, Over
Darwen. With them were daughters May Lewtas, born Blackpool
age 4, Elizabeth born Blackpool aged 3 and
Sarah J Lewtas born Over Darwen aged 8 months. It seems that the
family moved from the Blackpool area around 1850. George
was buried at St John's Blackburn on April 19th 1857 aged 37. Grave ref
no. 818.
The census returns of 1861 show Jane as a widow living at 3 Old Chapel
Street Blackburn a housekeeper with her children Mary, born
in Blackpool, a cotton winder aged 18, (Jane must have been about 16 when
Mary was born.) Elizabeth was a servant aged 11 , Margaret was
born in Over Darwen aged 9, Edward 6, Lilly 4 and Sarah J 10
months (a second daughter with these names) all born in Blackburn.
Another son William was born in 1862.
By 1881 George's widow Jane had the name Poulton (presumably remarried
and widowed a second time). She was living at 3 Cook Street
Blackburn and was working as a dressmaker. With her were her daughters
Mary a cotton warper and Sarah Jane a cotton weaver.
Mary was their next daughter baptised in St Chad's on 11th March
1823 She appears to have died young as there was a second Mary
baptised.
By now Edward had become involved in the pub
life of Poulton. In the Alehouse reconizances of 1822 he is listed
as landlord of the Bay Horse and giving surety to Richard Holden landlord
of the Plough, Thomas Hardman landlord of the Green Man and James
Taylor landlord of the Golden Ball.
At some time that year the family moved to Manchester. Possibly
they only one child with them – George – as both Anne and Mary their eldest
children must have died as other girls were later given these names.
Ellen was born in Manchester and baptised on 26th March 1826
in Manchester Cathedral She became a dressmaker & milliner,
appearing in the 1848 & 1852 Trades Directories on Breck Street with
the name 'Lutas'. (An Ellen Lewtas married John Haigh of Stile,
Halifax, on July 24th 1868 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Blackpool).
William was also born in Manchester and baptised on 11th March
1827 at St Marks Cheetham Hill. The family must have returned to
Poulton soon after as he was baptised again on 1st July 1827 - St Chad’s
register. William had been a Joiner's apprentice with
his father and later became a carpenter. William married Jane Bamford, (born
1826 in Galgate to Frank Bamford, labourer)
In 1861 William and Jane were living in Hastings Place Lytham
with their children Edward 1851, Mary A 1853 and Francis 1856
all born in Poulton and William 1858.in Lytham. Twenty
years later in 1881 they were living at 17 Adelaide Street Blackpool with
their children Mary, and George 1861, Jane 1863,
John T 1866, James 1868, the last four all
born in Lytham William died in 1884 and Jane
died in 1882; both are buried in Layton Cemetery Blackpool..
1) Their son James (1868) appears to be buried in
Layton cemetery with his wife May. He died in 1926 aged 57
and she 1958 aged 87.
2) Their son John Thomas (1866) married Martha Ann.
JT died in 1924 aged 58, she died in 1941 aged 77. They had
2 children buried with them - Florrie 1892-1918 and Billy 1899-1957.
3) Their son George (1861) appears to have married
Elizabeth Haywood b 1864 (father Joseph) in Blackpool on 5.11.1888. George
Haywood Lewtas was born Fylde Mar 1898.
4) Their son Francis (1856) married Grace
Parr 1859 on 1.12.1877 in Blackpool, her father was Matthew Parr.
They had a daughter Sarah Jane BVRI 14.5.1882, son William in 1879
(BVRI - 14.5.1882) and John Matthew 26.7.1885.
5) Their son William married Maria
from Stockport (born 1856) A baptism on December 25th 1878 in Blackpool
Weslyan Chapel records John Edward, a son, born on October 6th that
year. Mary Jane was born January 5th and baptised 25th
1880 and (when they were living at 1 Porter Street) Herbert was born
January 22nd and baptised March 13th 1881. This family went
to Canada. Francis & Grace also had a daughter Kate, whose granddaughter
is Olga who married Steve Beilby.
William and Maria emigrated to Canada.
Mary, a second daughter with this name, was
born in Poulton and baptised on 17th May 1829 in St Chad's.
She is recorded in the 1851 census for Liverpool working as
a nurse for Dr Thomas Lewtas, her father Edward's brother.
Ann, a second daughter with this name, was
baptised 24th April 1830 in St Chad's. She became
a servant in the house of J Pattison of Poulton. She married
Thomas Lawrenson on December 19th 1860. Both signed. Witnesses
William Rossall & Catherine Lewtas (St Chad's reg.)
Catherine was baptised in St Chad's on March 1st 1833.
In 1851 Catherine was living as a servant nearby on the
Breck with her Aunt Catherine Seed, Edward's sister, who had
married Richard Seed
On January 22nd 1854 Catherine's illegitimate son James,
was baptised in St Chad's. In 1861 Catherine was living with
her parents, Thomas & her son James on the Breck. By
1871 Catherine was still living in Poulton on the Breck but had her
own dressmaking establishment next door to her brother Thomas. She
also had an apprentice Eleanor Roe aged 18 living with her. Her son
James died and was buried on December 15th 1879 in Layton cemetery.
Edward was baptised on 27th Dec 1834 and died 15th July 1854
aged 20, possibly in the cholera epidemic which hit Poulton about that
time. He was a Joiner’s apprentice.
Isabella was baptised on 28th December 1836
and died in Oct 1854 soon after her brother Edward.
John was baptised on 20th March 1839 in St Chad's. It seems likely
that by 1881 John , a joiner, was living at 104 Warwick Street
Toxteth Park with his wife Ellen.
Thomas was born on March 4th 1843 and registered on March
7th. The youngest of all Edward and Mary's children
