Kirsten Lavers
Hello
here are some of my current places: a room on wheels, which could move (from place to place) but at present is static - waiting for a shift - a room that has written on its door "this is not a caravan this is a bridge"
a house which used to be my home but is now just a house
I am writing this in a small triangular office which has as its hypotenuse a window overlooking a large room filled with comfy chairs, a tv, bookshelf stuffed with cheap paperbacks and games and some dining tables and chairs sufficient for the 25 people who use this room as a place to be 'at home' between the hours of 7pm - 9.30am - it being a nightshelter for homeless people, where I work part time.
wondering every time what is my answer to the question "what do you do?"
answering, sometimes, actually, yes, installation does have something to do with plumbing and electrics
recently thinking about my relationship to reading and writing - partly provoked by reading Leonard Shlain's 'The Alphabet versus the Goddess' (horrible title) which proposes and argues that patriarchy/misogyny arose as a direct result of the development of alphabetic literacy* and partly by my reaction to being invited to participate in this project of "but i'm not a writer!"
and also about speaking and listening - if there is any discernible thread or line through my work then perhaps 'conversation' is the term i'd choose - a conversation in which I tend to listen more than speak - listening with my eyes perhaps more than my ears
also just wanting to offer something different from the usual introduction: former nurse, mother of two, teacher, visual artist making site-specific installation/performance, recently expanding into bookworks, internet curating, video.......
