Baroque music on Period Instruments
Gerard McDonald (Director): Traverso, Oboes, Recorders EDINBURGH 2000
ST. ANDREW’S & ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH, Wednesday, 16th August at 2.30 p.m.
MAINLY BACH - 1
The opening concert of this series celebrating not only J.S. Bach (died 1750) but also the largely-forgotten virtuosi Michel Blavet (flautist, born 1700) and Giuseppi Sammartini (oboeist who played in Handel's opera orchestra, died 1750). Also featured are works by their friends and colleagues - Telemann, Leclair and Handel himself.
Monday, 21st August at 12.30 p.m.
MAINLY BACH - 2
Bach's four indisputably genuine flute sonatas (two with continuo; two with obbligato harpsichord) - inspired by the brilliant virtuoso Buffardin - framing the G Major sonata for 'cello and obbligato harpsichord.
Tuesday, 22nd August at 2.30 p.m.
MAINLY BACH - 3
J.S. Bach's virtuoso toccatas for harpsichord, contrasted with trio and solo sonatas for flute, oboes and recorder by Telemann, who was his friend, colleague, sometime job rival and Godfather to his eldest son.
Wednesday, 23rd August at 2.30 p.m.
MAINLY BACH - 4
Virtuoso works for solo harpsichord and unaccompanied 'cello by J.S. Bach, contrasted with trios for two oboes and bass by Handel. A juxtaposition of two musical giants, who, despite several attempts, never actually met.
THE RUSSELL COLLECTION: ST. CECILIA'S HALL St. Cecilia’s Hall is the home of the Russell Collection of early keyboard instruments, and contains a number of the world’s finest harpsichords. Many of these have been restored to playing condition, and we are very grateful to the Collection for allowing us access, once again, to two such superb instruments.
