Organ
Óscar Candendo Zabala comes from San Sebastián (also known as
Donostia), the elegant capital of Spain's Basque region, and is recognised as one of
the truly noteworthy organists of his generation in Europe. He studied advanced piano
performance at the Conservatorio de Música in San Sebastián with Juan
Padrosa and (concurrently) organ performance with Jesús Martin Moro in the
Conservatoire at Pau, where (by unanimous decision) he won the Medaille d'Or du
Niveau Supérieure.
He continued with Jean Boyer and with Daniel Roth (Organiste Titulaire de
l'Église Saint Sulpice, Paris), and went on to l'Academie André Marchal
in Paris under Pierre Cogen (Organiste Titulaire de l'Église Sainte Clotilde,
Paris), completing his studies with Jan Willem Jansen and Michel Bouvard in Toulouse
(1996).
Having achieved some distinction at Pau, Óscar Candendo Zabala went on to
win First Prize in the 1992 Competition for Young Performers in Sevilla and also the
1993 Andrés Segovia and J.M. Ruiz Morales Award (for Performance of Spanish
Music), having taken part in masterclasses with Montserrat Torrent at the University
of Santiago de Compostela. Óscar Candendo Zabala has played in Portugal and
throughout Spain, and also undertook a highly-successful tour in Germany during
1995. Formerly Maestro de Capilla at the Iglesia de San Vicente in San Sebastian, where the organ was built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, he is now Assistant Maestro de Capilla at the Catedral del Buen Pastor in San Sebastian and teaches at the renowned Conservatory in Barcelona. "Óscar plays like a dream". (MONTSERRAT TORRENT, Barcelona)
