http://www.organum.org.uk  -  the  professional  website  of
classical  musician,  teacher  and  composer  Dr.  Julie  Ainscough.

Hello!  I would like to welcome you to my website and introduce myself.  I am Dr. Juliana Ainscough (although most people know me simply as "Julie", with my surname pronounced as in "though") and this website will give you an impression of a busy, full-time, freelance professional life spent in classical music, primarily as a teacher of piano, pipe organ, music theory, music composition plus choral conducting and rehearsal techniques, but also as a performer (mainly pipe organ) and composer.  Commissions for original musical compositions and musical arrangements may be accepted, subject to the usual negotiations.  I work under my maiden name, although I am married and have children, as all my qualifications have been gained under that name;  also, having a surname beginning with "A" can be useful, especially when being listed as a teacher by music and instrumental retailers et alia!  My website URL plays on a Latin word which can be translated as "voice, instrument or organ", which seemed apposite.

Having spent many years as 'Organist & Choirmaster' or 'Director of Music' in both Anglican and Roman Catholic parish churches, I am now Organist of a very different kind of church:  St. Augustine's Abbey at Chilworth, near Guildford, is a community of monks affiliated to the Subiaco Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict;  under the guidance of their Abbot, the Right Reverend Dom Paulinus Greenwood O.S.B., they moved into the former Franciscan Friary and Novitiate house at Chilworth in November 2011, having been resident previously at Ramsgate in Kent.  The beautiful, F.A. Walters-designed, Abbey church is open to the public for private prayer, meditation and attendance at the Daily Office, which commences in the early morning with Vigils and ends in mid-evening with Compline.  Mass is sung daily (with Gregoriam plainchant), normally at 9 a.m. on weekdays and at 10 a.m. on Sundays.  Trains on the Tonbridge-Guildford-Reading line call at Dorking (Deepdene) and at Chilworth (from which station St. Augustine's Abbey is but a quarter-mile uphill walk).

I live in Leatherhead, in the County of Surrey, in South-East England, near Junctions Nine and Ten of the M25 London orbital motorway, the A3 London-Portsmouth Road and the A24 London-Worthing Road;  both London Heathrow (LHR/EGLL) and London Gatwick (LGW/EGKK) airports are approximately thirty minutes' drive from Leatherhead.  Trains from London (Waterloo and Victoria) for Dorking, Horsham and Guildford call at Ashtead and Leatherhead;  trains from London (Waterloo) for Guildford call at Oxshott;  trains on the Tonbridge-Guildford-Reading line call at Dorking (Deepdene), close by the main station.

My substantial pupil roster draws upon a large geographical area which, principally, includes South-West London, Middlesex and Surrey. Pupils have come to me in recent times from Ashtead, Banstead, Barnes, Binscombe, Brockham, Cobham, Chobham, Claygate, Dorking, Ealing, East Horsley, East Molesey, Effingham, Epsom, Farnborough (Hampshire), Fetcham, Grayshott, Great Bookham, Hampton, Headley, Kingston-upon-Thames, Leatherhead, New Malden, Milford, Oxshott, Rainham (Essex), Raynes Park, Reigate, Redhill, Shamley Green, Staines, Streatham, Surbiton, Tadworth, Teddington, Thames Ditton, Twickenham, Uxbridge, Walton-on-Thames, West Byfleet, West Horsley, Westcott and Weybridge.  My pupils have been (and are) of many different nationalities, drawn from across the world, with a number coming from cultures beyond that of Western Europe.

I may be able to help fulfil your musical needs and aspirations.  Please contact me to discuss your musical requirements.  Fees are based on the standard professional scales stipulated by the Royal School of Church Music, the Royal College of Organists and the Incorporated Society of Musicians (which latter organisation elected me as an accredited member of its Register of Private Professional Teachers after exhaustive scrutiny of my modus operandi and having obtained thoroughly-validated references from within the profession).

"The ISM, founded in 1882, is the UK's professional body for all musicians. It promotes the art of music and upholds the honour and interests of the musical profession by protecting the interests of musicians, raising professional standards, and providing legal advice and other benefits to its 5,000 members, who include performers, teachers, composers, conductors, organists, writers and others involved in professional musical work.  Information can be supplied to you on request".

David Sanger (17th April 1947 - 28th May 2010)

I studied the organ at Trinity College of Music, London, then privately with the late David Sanger, the international concert organist, teacher of organ and (between 2009-2010) President of the Royal College of Organists.  He, himself, was a pupil of world-renowned professors Marie-Claire Alain and Anton Heiller).  David Sanger was a superlative performer, an exacting and inspirational teacher, a delightful friend and a man of impeccably upright character whose common sense, humour and wisdom engendered affection and respect from all who knew him.  His passing, in the most tragic circumstances, is mourned deeply around the world.  May he rest in peace.

A celebration of David's life was held on Saturday the Fifth of March 2011 at 2.00pm in Great St Mary's, the University Church in Market Square, Cambridge.  This was followed by a reception at Selwyn College.  A number of David's close colleagues and former students performed, Kevin Bowyer, Timothy Byram-Wigfield, Clive Driskill-Smith, Hans Fagius, Stephen Farr, David Goode, Jon Laukvik, Philip Rushforth and John Scott among them.  Additionally, some of David's choral music was sung.  An organ recital by a number of leading organists was also given in memory of David on Monday 1st November 2010 at 1 p.m. on the organ of St. Michael's, Cornhill, in the City of London.

I have received critical acclaim for performances of organ music from the late Renaissance and the Baroque eras, and have a particular affinity with the music of the Spanish, French and North German schools. I am also highly-reputed as a performer of organ music by the major French romantic and Twentieth Century composers - César Franck and Jehan Alain in particular.
"...a carefully-articulated performance of real stature and authority..." (DORKING ADVERTISER, Surrey)
"This occasion was very special...the instrumental playing was particularly fine".  (MALCOLM SINGER, Yehudi Menuhin School).

The choral repertoire which I encompass as a conductor can range from plainsong, the polyphonic era (the Spanish masters in particular), via the Baroque era and the Viennese classical school, to the leading composers of the Romantic age and the Twentieth Century. Music for the Church year and music for the choral society concert are catered for with equal understanding and skill.
"I am so pleased to know that the music (for the Guildford - Winchester Inter-Diocesan West Africa Link Festival Service at Guildford Cathedral) will be in safe hands".
(CANON ADRIAN LEAK, retired former Canon Præcentor of Guildford Cathedral).

I have a significant record of success as a teacher of pipe organ.  Prize-winning organ pupils have attained excellent examination results (up to Royal College of Organists professional diploma level) plus a number of organ scholarships, including the 2010-2013 Organ scholarships at Balliol, Pembroke and University colleges, the 2008-11 Organ Scholar at New College and the 2001-2004 Organ Scholar at Exeter College (all University of Oxford), plus the 2008-11 scholarship at Jesus College, University of Cambridge.
"...I just wanted to say how excellent I found Timothy Burke. I think he's a really splendid fellow and he's been exceedingly well-taught. Many congratulations, Julie..."
(the late DAVID SANGER, International concert organist and Professor).
"The (organ) scholars at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, are usually gap year (or older) musicians, so (for Lawrence Thain) to be awarded the scholarship at 14 he must have a pretty good teacher."  (HAMPTON SCHOOL PARENT, Monday 15/08/2005).

Piano tuition - at all levels from beginner to advanced (up to Performer's Certificate and University/Conservatoire entrance) - has occupied me successfully for over thirty years and is given on a superb grand piano by one of the world's greatest piano makers:  the Viennese firm of L. Bösendorfer Klavierfabrik GmbH.  Excellent examination results are backed-up by conspicuous success in competitive music festivals.

With some forty years' experience of Anglican and Roman Catholic church musicianship at parish, monastic and cathedral levels, I am able to offer both musical talent and practical ability on a human level.
"Take it from me:  I've been coming to this church for the past forty years or so, but we have never had a Carol Service as good as this before."  (Parishioner, Christ Church, London SW20).
"Dr. Julie Ainscough ... has supported and enhanced our Sunday Eucharist by accompanying the monks' plainchant with great care, sensitivity and understanding."
(The Right Reverend Dom M. A. Paulinus Greenwood OSB, Abbot of Chilworth, 16th November 2012).

I studied Composition with Professor Antonin Tucápsky at Trinity College of Music London (and won the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Prize for Composition in the year before admission to Fellowship there).  Post-graduate study followed at the University of London (Goldsmiths' College Degree of Master of Music in Composition).  I received the University of Surrey's David Lovatt Prize for Composition in November 2005 and was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music by the University of Surrey on the 25th of May 2011, graduating on Friday 20th April 2012.
"The finest composition student I have ever had".
(Professor Stanley Glasser, now retired as Professor Emeritus of Goldsmiths' College, University of London).
"I was very delighted with your music, with your progress, with your perseverance, with your devotion...".
(Professor Antonín Tučapský, now retired as Professor Emeritus of Trinity College London).
"Well done!  This (the David Lovatt Prize for Composition) is exciting news".
(Professor Sebastian Forbes, University of Surrey - 11/11/2005).
