HAWKE

This
is the earliest home of the HAWKE family that I have traced so far, it
was called "Hillside House" and is now in 1998 called "Island House" and
is situated at the top of the hill in a small village called Cornworthy,
near Totnes, Devon.

My mothers maiden name
was Barbara Catherine Glanville HAWKE born 15 January 1923 in Plymouth.
She lived in Plymouth and then married my father Noel Richard THOMPSON.
Both served in the Royal Air Force during World War 2. My mother served
as a cook and my father in the Air Sea Rescue branch of the RAF, both served
in Plymouth for a short period.
Her father was Charles
Graham HAWKE born born 11th March 1899 at Cornworthy near Totnes.
This picture
shows from left to right, my grandfather Charles Graham HAWKE, his three
children, Pamela, Barbara, & Patrica, then his wife Rose HAWKE nee
GOARD . Photo taken about 1936.. During the time that Charles lived
in Plymouth, he lived in Lower Compton, then Beacon Park just off Mutley
Plain, and finally near Roborough on the outskirts of the city.
During this time
he had built up a reliable reputation as a Master Butcher, a trade that
ran in his family.

Charles HAWKE had several
brothers, Albert Frederick, William Alfred, Edgar Ernest and John Leonard
HAWKE. All were born at Cornworthy, Albert went to Ireland about 1920,
Edgar was also believed to be a butcher, John died of his wound received
in France in World War 1.
Charles had one sister
Mary Eveline HAWKE.

The earliest HAWKE that
I have found so far is Ann HOKE (most likely recorded wrongly) born about
1775, we know that she had 2 sons, Richard b 1795 and Edward 1804.
Richard has
a recorded occupation of "Thatcher", Edward was an agricultural labourer
and appears to have been disabled through some kind of farming accident.
This is the occupations
that are prominent throughout the HAWKE name living in and around
Cornworthy, there were some variations, some were labourers, then butchers
and later Master Butchers.

The family(s) lived at
Hillside House until about the time of death of Albert HAWKEs wife Mary
Catherine (nee BROWN) in 1909. Somewhere around the start of World
War 1 in 1914, members of the family started to move further out to Dartmouth,
Paignton and Totnes.
Albert eventually
moved out from Hillside House and moved to the bottom of the village in
to a small premises called Wisteria Cottage, he lived there till his death
in 1935.
For many years there
was little said amongst the surviving brothers and offspring, it transpired
that at Albert's funeral, they all fell out over the ownership of a good
quality coal scuttle !
Charles HAWKE moved
to Plymouth, Ernest HAWKE moved to Totnes and others spread to Dartmouth.
There are indications that the Hawkes that went to South America in the
early 1900's, later returned and descendants now work in London.
The HAWKE's that went to Ireland eventually returned to England both had
careers in the nursing profession.
Rose HAWKE nee GOARD
was born in Plymouth on 2 October 1900 at 12 Baring St, Plymouth. Her parents
were Charles Prout GOURD born Plymouth and Florence GOARD nee GLANVILLE.
Charles GOURD/GOARD
was a Police Constable in the Plymouth Borough Force and both variations
of the surname are recorded on his police file. There is a record
of Charles GOURDs parents coming from Mylor in Cornwall.
