THOMPSON


 This is my Grandfather Albert Richard THOMPSON on the left,
and my Great Grandfather Richard Ernest THOMPSON on the right.

Richard Ernest was born about 1870 somewhere in the London area (Battersea / Wandsworth) he worked as an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company. He was apparently a very good musician and often appeared on stage in musical performances. It is not known the name he used on stage or the musical instrument he played. It now appears that his father Richard was born in London about 1845

Albert Richard THOMPSON was born 6th October 1899 again born London area. He trained as a clerk and worked in H.M. Customs Departments in and around London.

In April 1922 he married Gabrielle Jean Elisa VAUSSOUE in Paris, at this time he gave his address as
94 Ashbury Rd, Battersea, London.

They had three children, Noel Richard born 3rd January 1924 born at 50 Wroughton Rd, Battersea, Wandsworth, London, then there was Bernard Dennis born 23rd May 1932 and then Louis for which I have not yet found any records.

Albert eventually moved to Southampton and was still a Customs and Excise Officer and eventually died in 1982.

My father Noel Richard trained and served in the Royal Air Force during World War 2. He started as an aircraft apprentice, then moved on to wireless operator, air gunner and then on to Air Sea Rescue. For a period of time he was on the Rescue Launches that operated from Malta and out towards the North African coast.  He later went on to the Sunderland flying boat and served in the far east.
After his being invalided out on medical grounds, he taught himself shorthand and became an accomplished journalist, he reportedly wrote two plays for television in the 1960 -1970 period.

His first marriage to my mother Barbara (HAWKE) was not successful, they separated just after the marriage, got back together for a few years in the late 1950's, eventually divorced and he then married Mary (?) and lived in Stafford for the rest of his live until 1979. There was one son from that marriage called Richard born 5th June 1968 and died of leukaemia in 13th December 1986.

I am the only child of Noel by his first marriage, I was born 28th March 1946 in Plymouth. Much against my mothers wishes I also joined the Royal Air Force as an Electronics Mechanic in Communications.   I spent 5 years in the service and eventually joined the Police Service and I have been there for 28 years.

I am married to Rita Elizabeth (HELLARD) and have three children, Paul Richard, Diane Rose and Philip Michael.
