District Cooking Competition
26th April 2008

The boys went to Wantage this morning and cooked against 2 other teams 2nd and 15th. And they won. (2nd were second and 15th were third). I have to say, they did look very smart in their chefs outfits, they worked really well as a team, and they enjoyed it. In the comments at the end the judges said that 23rd had best presentation, 2nd food tasted best, 15th enjoyed their meal most. From what I saw of the others menus, teams working and the food on the plates they all cooked well, and it must have been a close decision.

Inter District Cooking Competition
10th May 2008

Well, it was a close one today. There was only 1 point between 2 teams (us and 1st Chalgrove). Chalgrove got 135 points, we got 136!! WINNERS.   When we got there, the Chalgrove chaps were all really big, and kitted out in butchers aprons, chefs hats and towels draped over their apron ties.  They had really posh crockery/tableware, and I've not seen such nice camp cooking equipment before (eg automatic peeler, shiny stainless steel mixing bowls etc). But actually in the marks, the fact that their stuff was posher did not really make a difference as presentation wise it did look good, but we had all the stuff too, just in slightly less posh form.  The teams were neck and neck all the way. I really couldn't tell how it was going to go.   Both had 101 points after the first 8 categories, ie up to plating up.  But we just got it on food the 2 impartial judges brought in just for the tasting element liked ours very slightly more.  (Their menu was a bit more adventurous than ours so I think it came down to taste/personal tastes of judges). We've got a certificate (and a warm glow) for the boys' efforts.
The trophy was a battered tin of chopped tomatoes?!
