SFANTA MARIA (St Mary) CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.

In 1977 Link Romania identified that the Sfanta Maria Children's Hospital in Iasi was lacking even basic facilities. Conditions included: broken floor coverings, damaged walls, bathrooms with broken fittings and leaky plumbing, covered with mould and mildew. This combination allowed cockroaches to flourish and contributed to the problem of cross infection.

In collaboration with the Director of the hospital and following a detailed assessment of the hospital's needs a work plan, with a time scale, was drawn up. So far 50% of the work has been completed and the remainder is expected to be finished during 2002.

The work is carried out by a local workforce to a high standard using quality materials using funding via Link Romania. Wards have been repaired and repainted, bathrooms completely refitted, and treatment rooms refurbished, the work entails complete replacement of electrical and plumbing systems. Now the third floor of the hospital remains to be tackled.

Members of MOB - Miserable Old Buggers Club - have made a generous contribution towards making the lives of sick and handicapped child patients immeasurably better. Fundraising events have been fun occasions - treasure hunts, quiz evenings, "Unwanted Christmas Present" auctions. The MOB Club will continue to support the Sfanta Maria Children's Hospital in 2002. Could you become a MOB member and have fun whilst helping sick children in Romania?

Applications for membership are welcome, a modest £2.50 gives an annual membership while £25.00 confers Life Membership.

THIS IS THE SFANTA MARIA (St Mary) CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.

Iasi is the 4th largest city in Romania, after Bucharest, Contanta adn Cluj. St Mary's Hospital was built in 1970 to provide 400 children's beds in a catchment area encompassing 4 million people.

The facilities fell into poor repair and a report, commissioned by the Charity Link Romania in June 1997 observed "it is unacceptable for seriously ill children to be treated in such a run down and poorly equipped hospital."

With the support of the MOB Club and other sponsors, Link Romania, working through it's Romanian partner, Fundatia Link Romania Moldava, have progressively repaired and renovated wards, corridors and bathrooms.

Work is carried out by a dedicated team, some of whom were previously 'street kids' - homeless, abondoned young people, living on the streets of the city, who have worked through development and rehabilitation projects and are now able to take their place in society.
