HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING PROCESS

The level of public participation in the planning process is disappointing, and this is often because people are not sure how to make their views known. Applications are advertised in local newspapers on Fridays and comments are received within the following two weeks. If you have any comments on or queries about current planning applications, contact your local planning division quoting the application number and location of the proposal. The addresses are listed below.

Remember that although your district council is unable to determine planning applications, it is consulted about them, so you should contact local councillors to let them know your views. The council's planning committee meetings will normally allow you to speak briefly on applications they are considering. You should contact your local councillor or the town clerk to ask if you can make a deputation. Friends of the Earth have produced an excellent document on the planning process entitled The Northern Ireland Planning System: A User's Guide. It is available from their offices at 40 Wellington Park, Belfast BT9 6DN (tel 028-9066 4311), and costs £3.00.

Too often the Society is the only objector to proposals which adversely affect the built heritage. Our letters set out the architectural and/or historic merits of the building affected and cite the local plan and other policy documents where relevant. The most important of these is generally Planning Policy Statement 6: Planning, Archaeology and the Built Heritage, which is available from all planning divisions and from Planning Service, Clarence Court, 10-18 Adelaide Street, Belfast (tel 028-9054 0540). However you may have personal knowledge of the history or legal background of a site that can be relevant, or you may simply believe that an application would damage our environment - make your views known to the Planning Service. Its website is at www.doeni.gov.uk/planning.
