This anti-globalisation grumpy old cynic has decided to sign out and switch off after concluding that the disadavantages of the www are now starting to outweigh it's benefits.
The golden age of the internet that Tim Berners-Lee had in mind has passed. What started as a clever way of freely sharing information is quickly turning into a global conduit for obtaining wealth by legitimate means or otherwise. Commercial profiteers and clever criminals are now battling for dominance. Governments will join in to tighten their control and influence over the ordinary citizens. Why do you think they are keen to get everybody on-line?
Our mouseclicks and keyboard taps for information are easily and surreptiously acquired from all corners of the world. Do we know who is capturing this information? If we did, do we trust them with that information? Unfortunately, their target audience is vast and growing and becoming an attractive source for their customer base and pool of potential victims.
To help you engage in the www safely there are protection packages available. The downside is that they gobble up evermore computer resource to keep you 'safe' and when things do go wrong, they could go horribly wrong much faster with a high sort-out cost in time and money afterwards.
Although I empathised with the Unabomber's predictions and concerns about the onslaught of technological advance I abhored his methods of attention and redress. Unfortunately in this world we can't stop 'progress' individually but we can choose to opt out.
See you in the unconnected world sometime in the future.
Goodbye.
