UK  LICENCES

To become a Radio Amateur you need a licence.
In the UK there are 3 levels of licence:
Foundation
restricted to a power of 10 watts with commercially made equipment,
Intermediate
50 watts with commercial or home-built equipment,
Full
400 watts and other privileges.

Each level has its own written, multiple-choice exam.
In addition, there are practical assessments at the Foundation and Intermediate levels.
You have to start at the Foundation Level and progress through the Intermediate Level before being eligible to sit the Advanced exam that qualifies you for a Full licence.
Program QADV contains revision questions for the Advanced exam.

Students can prepare for the Advanced exam in 3 ways:
  (1)  self study
swotting up the textbook ''Advance! The Full Licence Manual'' on their own,
  (2)  distance learning
the modern equivalent of a correspondence course,
  (3)  attending a course
run by a local radio club.

You do not have to pass a Morse test.

INTERNATIONAL EXAM

The International Amateur Radio Examination is endorsed by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU).
It is run twice yearly by the RSGB.
The textbook entitled  ''International Amateur Radio Examination Manual'' (RSGB 2006) contains a summary of the syllabus for the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate (HAREC).   The technical chapters of the  ''International Manual''  follow closely those of  ''Advance! The Full Licence Manual''.
To make the questions in QADV useful to students revising for the International Exam, the program contains page references to the ''International Manual''.
