Questions for Radio Amateurs
Amateur Radio Licences in the UK

Return to homepage

To become a Radio Amateur you need a licence.

In the UK there are 3 levels of licence:
     Foundation
restricted to a power of 10 watts with commercially made equipment,
    Intermediate
50 watts with commercial or home-built equipment,
    Full
         400 watts and other privileges.

Each level has its own written, multiple-choice exam.   In addition, there are practical assessments at the Foundation and Intermediate levels.
You are not required to attend a course; but most candidates do - contact your local radio club.

You have to start at the Foundation Level and progress through the Intermediate Level before being eligible to sit the Advanced exam that qualifies you for a Full licence.

Program QADV contains practice questions for the Advanced exam.

You are not required to pass a Morse test.
