Cimbalom
This Hungarian Instrument is a ninteenth century reverse development from the
Piano. It is in fact more properly named a Concert Grand Cimbalom since smaller
versions are available. As the name suggests it is used in orchestral music, most notably by
the composer Igor Stravinsky, but also and probably more naturally by Gypsy street musicians.
It has more or less lost the portability of the Dulcimer, other than for the most dedicated
aficionados and is not recommended for those with hernias or back problems.
The sound favoured by the locals is rather plunkey but particularly
suitable for the fast Folk Music of that area.
This was a repair project that required replacement of all
the strings, the dampers and the soundboard.
