Welcome to HTW
Introduction
Devoted to the past,
present, and future of television in the United Kingdom,
HTW places emphasis on the programme makers as opposed to
the programmes themselves (though some programmes
inevitably do get mentioned). Special sections are
provided for each of the main UK TV broadcasters (
BBC,
ITV,
Channel 4,
Channel Five), plus features on other
topics such as
Colour Television are also included. At
the moment satellite and cable broadcasters such as
Sky, National Geographic and MTV are not included but
these broadcasters are relatively young compared with
the terrestrial broadcasters (with the exception of
Channel Five and perhaps
Channel 4); however some of these may
be included at a later date.
New in this update
In this minor update the
ITV section has some new images and
text, plus the
Links page has been revised with two
new sites added. HTW has recently been overhauled with
a brand new look to coincide with the 50th anniversary
of ITV in 2005, with all the existing pages being
revised with new information and pictures added -
particularly in the
BBC,
ITV,
Colour television and
Early BBC Schools Broadcasts sections -
as well as some minor corrections and amendments made
to other pages. Plus major new features were added
which are detailed below.
HTW's major new section that is devoted to regional
broadcasting in the South and South-East of England, is
entitled
Compass. Currently this section
comprises of a page devoted to
BBC TV South as well as separate pages
for each of the three companies that have held the ITV
franchise for this region:
Southern,
TVS and
Meridian. This section will be expanded
in due course with even more information.
Also included is a page devoted to
BBC Children's Programmes of the 1970s
in the
Programmes section; this section also
now includes the return of the
QD: The Master Game section (which is
all about a quiz that was shown on Channel 4 in 1991)
which makes a welcome reappearance.
Gallery
All the previously featured TV and video
advertisements have now been gathered together in the new
Gallery section which shows all the
adverts as thumbnail pictures on an index page.
Clicking on a thumbnail in the
Gallery will display a large version of
the selected picture; at which point you can then
either step forwards and backwards through the images
by clicking on the links at the top of the page or
alternatively click on the Home link to return to the
thumbnail page.
Further information
HTW is not part of any UK
broadcasting organisation. If you wish to contact a
UK broadcaster, there is a list of broadcasters provided on
the Links page.
