Bexley East

The Bexley East area comprises the Bexley village and all the area to the east of the village up to the eastern boundary of the London Borough of Bexley. The latter can be roughly defined as Baldwyns Park. The northern boundary is the A2 road and the southern boundary is rather ill-defined in an area of fields and woodland.

Neither between the wars nor since World War II has the area been greatly affected by the mass development characterised in the northern and western parts of the Borough; and much of the area is now either covered by Conservation Area designations or Metropolitan Green Belt. Many of the buildings in the village, including the railway station are covered by some level of listing, such that even though there has been some replacement building the general 'feel' of it is the same as when my family moved to Bexley in 1925. The general smell disappeared when Reffell's Brewery closed down and became an industrial estate. Most of the new residential building has been individual and small developments, some of it replacement for large Victorian houses and mainly concentrated on the high ground towards the eastern boundary of the Bexley East area.
