Danson Mansion and Stables
The former Bexley Urban District Council acquired Danson Park in 1925.
The Mansion was used for wedding receptions and other functions. During World War II it was the headquarters of the local Civic Defence. After the war the building deteriorated and the newly formed Bexley Borough lacked the funding to undertake the major repairs that were necessary. The Society campaigned for its restoration, and eventually English Heritage were persuaded to undertake the task. It has been wonderfully restored and will be open to the public in Spring 2005. The Society had the privilege of holding there the 2004 Conference of the Kent Federation of Amenity Societies.
The Stables were used for many years for the storing of park maintenance and sports equipment. It was a decision of the Borough to demolish the building that led to the formation of the Society as a protest group. The stables were saved but it is a brewing firm that undertook the restoration and use as a restaurant.
