The Manor House, Sidcup

The Council has agreed a plan to protect one of Bexley's most significant houses, the Manor House in Sidcup.

At a Public Cabinet meeting held in December, Councillors adopted a conservation and management scheme that will help the future restoration of the Grade II listed building. The plan allows for the possible redevelopment on land now occupied by newer additions to the house which would not compromise the integrity of the historic building. As well as improving the overall appearance of the site, such a development would generate income that could be used to finance the restoration and maintenance of the Manor House. It was agreed that the building would not be sold to finance the future provision of Council accommodation. The Council will maintain the Registry in the Manor House until at least 2014. A separate review of the Registry service is to be carried out.

Thanks to Bexley Civic Society many signed a petiton to keep the Manor House and subsequently many letters were written. This shows the strength of the Society and shows that the Council does heed what its citizens have to say, if enough rally to a cause.
