From Space Rock to Prog Rock |
Formed in the early 1990s, Turtle Om have gone through many changes over the years. They began as a four piece (2 gtrs, bass, drums) gigging band.
Their early sound was heavily inspired by space rock(Hawkwind in particular), but it was not long before founder members Simon and Nick realised that their musical outlook was broader than this and began to write progressive music that was more akin to early Genesis, Yes and King Crimson.
The band began to evolve, the bass player and Drummer departed, and new member
Darren O'Brien was recruited to play bass.
At this point the band shifted its commitment to recording as opposed to live work
(the band has not played a gig since),at first using an analogue 8-track and then
changing to direct to hard disk digital recording.
This development has opened a whole new area of sound to the trio, with a mixture of
MIDI and live instruments together with close harmony vocals.
Turtle Om have begun
to create material unthought of in previous incarnations.
Song writing became more of a group process with ideas, (both large and small) flying
about like large and small flying things.
Interest in their debut album Utopia Planitia has been exciting and positive (CD copies have sold out again). A Review is available on this site and sound Samples can be down loaded.
Since then the band have been busy recording their follow-up album
"The Festival Of Fish" at The Doug McClure Memorial Studio.
