Key Stage education sessions on offer

WE are pleased to offer a number of education sessions for schools on the following topics. Teachers . . . if you would like to book a session for your pupils, contact the Community Learning Officer, Kate Dobson, on 01270 627104 (or e-mail education@nantwichmuseum.org.uk)

Reception: Introduction to museums

A full introduction into what a museum is and how it can help us to learn about different people and places. Pupils investigate objects and materials, handle objects, try on costumes, and discover similarities and differences between old and new.

KS1 Toys through time

Come and meet our Edwardian teddy and his friends! Explore and identify differences between old and new toys. Learn how to handle fragile objects. Enjoy fun activities and play time!

KS1 The Great Fire of Nantwich

Become a Tudor fire detective and uncover clues in the Museum and around the town. Learn the importance of written evidence, try on replica Tudor costumes, take part in exciting role play. Explore the events of December 1583 and find out how people used to put out fires.

KS2 Victorians

Discover how Nantwich changed during the Victorian era. Find out about the lives of Victorian people, handle real Victorian artefacts, explore the town and find clues about our Victorian past.

KS2 Discover Tudor Nantwich

Learn about life for rich and poor in Tudor Nantwich. Become a Tudor detective and examine objects, written evidence, costume and buildings to find out more about life in Tudor times.

KS2 Discover Tudor Medicine

Examine Nantwich-born John Gerard’s famous ‘Herbal’ published in 1597 and uncover Tudor attitudes to illness and medicine. Take part in role play activities, handle artefacts and try on costumes.

KS2/3 The Second World War

Discover what life was like for local children and evacuees. Find out how Crewe and Nantwich contributed to the ‘War Effort’. Handle real artefacts and examine real documents from the period. Imagine what it must have been like to be a child during the Second World War.

Kate says: "This is a session which has only just been developed here at the museum. Now is a good time for more schools to come and take part. There’s lots for the children to do and take away with them. Last time this was put on we even had an air raid siren."

KS2/KS3 The Civil War and Battle of Nantwich

Find out about the role Nantwich played in the Civil War during the 1640s. Examine real shot and cannon balls found in Nantwich, handle replica objects and try on costumes to learn about life in the 17th century. Decide whether you would have been a Royalist or Parliamentarian.

KS2/KS3

Examine maps, photographs, documents and artefacts to find out about Nantwich and the people who have lived and worked here. Discover how things have developed and changed over the years.

Sessions can be changed to suit different ages and abilities up to Key Stage 4.

Colleges, Universities and Community Groups

WE offer a range of talks and walking tours for colleges, universities and community groups. A general history tour of the town lasts approximately one to one-and-a-half hours and can be adapted, if required, to accommodate requirements.

The subjects are: Victorian Nantwich, Tudor Nantwich, or the Civil War and the Battle of Nantwich.

All tours must be booked in advance. As a first step, collect a leaflet from the Museum Reception Desk.

Adult learning

A VARIETY of day and evening classes are available in the museum for adults. Enrolment is usually at the beginning of the spring or autumn terms.

A craft group meets on Thursday mornings and arranges a number of workshops throughout the year. Ask for details (01270 627104).
