War trenches models by pupil on show

TWO intricately constructed 1/32 scale models depicting life in the British and German trenches of the First World War on show in the museum are the work of Fiona Rowe, a Year 9 student at Shavington High School.

The German model (pictured) depicts a trench held by the Wurtenburg XIII Army Corps as it would have been in early 1918 immediately before the final onslaught by Allied troops. Russian prisoners of war would have constructed the fortification which incorporated concrete bunkers, machine gun emplacements, tunnels for moving troops, dug outs and command posts. Heavy belts of barbed wire would have protected the structure.

The model of the British trench depicts a 1916 structure.
