 Nantwich paintings

THIS is Townsend House in Welsh Row, Nantwich, as seen by the town's famous artist, Herbert St. John Jones, in a rough sketch he produced in May 1934. It is one of several paintings by the artist on show in the Museum. The location is now King's Court, a small complex of houses, but the house has been a home - visited by King James I in 1617 (hence the current name) - and a brewery. Its garden is currently the subject of a campaign by Nantwich Walled Garden Society who want to preserve it as an Elizabethan garden, while a housing developer has applied to build on the site.

See more paintings by Herbert St. John Jones on this page.

A WELL-KNOWN event in the history of Nantwich was the Great Fire of 1583, painted (above) by Herbert St. John Jones. This was the previous painting acquired by the Museum. Read more about the fire on this external website. (Afterwards use the Return button to come back to the Museum website.)
