THIS is Townsend House in Welsh Row,
Nantwich, as seen by the town's famous artist, Herbert St. John Jones,
in a rough sketch he produced in May 1934. It is one of several
paintings by the artist on show in the Museum. The location is now
King's Court, a small complex of houses, but the house has been a home
- visited by King James I in 1617 (hence the current name) - and a brewery. Its garden is
currently the subject of a campaign by
Nantwich Walled Garden
Society who want to preserve it as an Elizabethan garden, while a
housing developer has applied to build on the site.
