Hoard of Roman coins found near Nantwich added to our collection

A ROMAN coins hoard has been purchased by the Museum to become part of our permanent collection.

The coins were found near Barbridge by Reg Baker (pictured), a member of Crewe and Nantwich Metal Detecting Club, while he was out metal detecting with his grandson.

The find was declared Treasure Trove and was assessed by the British Museum. As Nantwich is the nearest accredited museum to the find spot we were given first refusal to purchase the hoard. Reg was keen for it to come here and he kindly donated the share of the money he was due so that the Museum could purchase it at half price.

We offer our thanks to him for his generosity and his support for his local museum.

The coin pictured top depicts a camp gate from about AD326 while the lower one shows a Roman head.
