First Shots.

Here in England the routine for starting in archery is to do a six week 'beginners course'. These are usually held in the Spring between May and July. You will be shooting the bow straight away and the first technique taught is usually 'point of aim'.
Point of Aim:

  • Stand side on to the target.
  • Nock the back of the arrow onto the string.
  • Place the shaft of the arrow on the bow's rest.
  • Hook your three middle fingers around the string below the arrow nock.
  • Look at the target (it won't be very far away!)
  • Raise the bow so that it points toward the target.
  • Draw the string back to your face.
  • Holding steady; aim along the length of the arrow at the top of the gold (the centre colour of the target).
  • Let go the string while holding your position.
  • Smack it hits the target.
  • Relax your position.
my shot Fudge does 'point of aim'.
'Point of Aim' can be very accurate at short distances; up to twenty meters. After that a more classic technique is needed where the string is held with the top; index, finger above the arrow and the drawing hand is "anchored" under the chin. This gives the arrow more elevation. The archer also uses a front bowsight.
