Most archers arrive at a tournament an hour before shooting starts. The first thing to do is to find your place and set up your gear. The organisers will have arranged a target for you to shoot on so look for that number. This is a good time to introduce yourself to the other archers that will be shooting on the same target.
These judges are checking that the organisers have set out the targets correctly. Meanwhile all the competitors take their bows for inspection. Everyone is thus assured that noone else has an unfair advantage.
At a FITA tournament archers have four minutes to shoot each set of six arrows. A 'traffic light' system is used to keep time. Green is for shooting to start, amber indicates there are only thirty seconds left and noone may shoot when the red light is on. The first distance here is ninety metres.
