formerly known as the
New Website for New Museum! Welcome to the original website, set up for the erstwhile Sheffield Bus Museum. These days, we have a different name and a broader remit covering all forms of transport in South Yorkshire. And we've got a new, improved website with a new domain name to match our new title. It's www.sytm.co.uk and it's now the Official Website of the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. This site, www.sheffieldbusmuseum.com, will continue to exist as a kind of virtual museum for the old Tinsley Tram Shed and as a signpost to the new Museum website.
Want to Hire a Double Decker? Our Most Frequently Asked Question is undoubtedly: "Can we hire one of your buses for our wedding?" Yes you can, as we now run South Yorkshire Heritage Hire, providing private hire trips in old-fashioned front-engined double deckers.
Of course, you don't have to get married to hire a bus, we'll consider any kind of excursion, from a day at the races to a night at the opera. (But no monkey business!)
Event and Open Days for 2012 We're now well established at our new base in Aldwarke, just north of Rotherham. In fact, it's already over five years since we left Tinsley. Our first Event Day this year is on Sunday 11th March.
Following that there'll also be special Event Days on the following Sundays in 2012: 8th April (Easter Day), 13th May, 10th June, 8th July, 12th August, 16th September, 14th October, 11th November and 9th December. Our Event Days are special occasions with special themes, and we generally receive well over a hundred visitors. A modest entry fee is charged. We now open at 11 a.m. on Event Days, with the last entry at 4 p.m.
Admission charges are still just £3.50 for adults and £2 for children, senior citizens and other unwaged people. And there's still a Family Ticket at £8, which covers 2 adults and up to 3 children.
The Museum also has Open Days every Saturday, from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There's nothing special happening on these days but there will be members working on the many different vehicles, and visitors find it interesting to see how much work goes into vehicle preservation. These Open Days are free of charge, though of course we are always glad of any donations to the Museum.
The South Yorkshire Transport Museum can be found just off the A6123 on Waddington Way at Aldwarke. First Group's X78 service provides a frequent service from Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster to the Mushroom Roundabout. From there it's about a 20 minute walk to the Museum.
