Introduction

The Sheffield Bus Museum first opened in 1987. Up until the end of 2006 it was housed in part of the former Tinsley Tram Sheds. It is now based at a new location in Aldwarke, near Rotherham. And it has a new name: the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.

How to find the Museum

The new Museum, now renamed the South Yorkshire Transport Museum, is situated just off the A6123 on Waddington Way at Aldwarke. First Group's X78 service provides a frequent service from Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster to the Mushroom Roundabout. From there it's about a 20 minute walk to the Museum. For up to date travel information we recommend you telephone South Yorkshire PTE's "TRAVELINE" on Rotherham (01709) 515151, or visit the Traveline Yorkshire Journey Planner. (Make sure you have cookies enabled to use the Journey Planner, otherwise it refuses to play.)

This site also includes a couple of maps to help you reach us: one shows Aldwarke and the general area of South Yorkshire, the other is a more detailed map of Aldwarke. (Use your BACK button to return to this page.)

Hiring a Vintage Bus

Without a doubt our Most Frequently Asked Question is, "Can we hire one of your buses for our wedding?" Yes we can as we've now launched South Yorkshire Heritage Hire, usually with Doncaster 188, a Leyland Titan PD2/40 (new in 1963 to Doncaster Corporation Transport) and Sheffield 687 (new in 1953 to Sheffield Corporation Transport). In 2011 our buses were hired out on 35 occasions and we're hoping to do a lot more in the coming years.

We are keen to encourage more people to join the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. Members have free access to the Museum on " Event Days", receive a quarterly newsletter keeping them in touch with Museum developments and they also have the opportunity to take an active "hands on" involvement in vehicle restoration, fund raising or the many varied jobs that are essential to the Museum's smooth running. Other members join the Museum Trust simply to add some financial support through their membership fees. All are very welcome and anyone interested is warmly invited to complete the application form below.

Event Days

Special Event Days in 2012 will be 11th March, 8th April (Easter Day), 13th May, 10th June, 8th July, 12th August, 16th September (Rally Day), 14th October, 11th November, and 9th December. These dates are all Sundays and we open at 11 a.m. Last entry is at 4 p.m. Entry charges are £3.50 for adults and £2 for children, senior citizens and other unwaged people. There's also a Family Ticket priced at £8, which covers 2 adults and up to 3 children.

The Museum also has Open Days every Saturday except at Christmas and New Year, from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There's nothing special happening on these days but there will be members working on the many different vehicles, and visitors find it interesting to see how much work goes into vehicle preservation. These Open Days are free to attend but any donations to our cause are more than welcome.

South Yorkshire Transport Rally 2012

The highly popular South Yorkshire Transport Rally will be held on Sunday 16th September 2012. This year for the first time the rally will be held at Aldwarke. The Rally Organiser is still Dr Gordon Brooke, and you can write to him at 8 Holt Rise, Leeds, LS16 7QF, or telephone him on 0113 267 8506, or e-mail him for more details or to request a vehicle entry form.

This site includes some photos of the Rally in recent years.

How to join the Museum Trust

Sheffield Bus Museum is keen to encourage more people to join. The cost is still £15 a year for adults, £10 for juveniles, senior citizens and unwaged people, and £25 for a family (up to 2 adults and 2 children, all living at the same address). The main SYTM site has an application form in pdf format for you to fill in.
