Picture Page No. 3 - the original Sandtoft Miniature Railway

Sadly the original Miniature Railway is no longer in operation at Sandtoft and the track has been lifted, but here are a couple of photographs to remind us of what once was.

The SMR has since relocated to Thorne. You can get more details on their current operations from the official Sandtoft Miniature Railway website.

A locomotive being steamed on the Sandtoft Miniature Railway. Behind it is the locomotive shed, erected in 1996. The railway used to run in a long loop, passing through woodlands and calling at two stations on the way. When more than one train was running, electric signals were used to ensure passengers' safety.     Photo: Alison Wilson

The first steam train of 1999 [see caption - file size 43KB]

This photograph shows the first Steam Train of 1999, about to depart from the Haxey Halt station at 2pm on the 1st January 1999. The locomotive, Remus, is a 0-4-0 Romulus type locomotive, built in 1985 by Harold Dyson of Doncaster, one of the founder members of the Sandtoft Miniature Railway. The railway was opened in 1983. In 1996 the locomotive was refurbished, including a new boiler, the railway track was extensively altered at the main station, including a new three track complex into the new railway shed which was completed in the same year.
