You may have heard of it, you may have even thought about attending, BUT unless you are one of the lucky ones to have experienced the event then you really don't know how much you have been missing.
It's a fact that you can't please all of the people all of the time but I assure you we do our very best to try. If ever there was an event that epitomises our slogan of giving value for money then this is it.
From lunch time on the Friday until 5 o'clock on the Sunday our team of family, friends and first class lectures give of their all and more if you can find it.
It's not a weekend for the faint hearted so be warned. New attendees always ask what do we do in the evenings? - the regulars reply SLEEP!

Caffle European Academy from 6th - 8th November 1998
Once again it is that time of year. Time to send out the details for our European Academy which this year promises to be the best yet. We have been working hard since last year to find just the right combination of lectures and lecturers. Things always change from year to year and this is to be no exception.
Academy ‘98 sees some changes to our previous weekends, the greatest of which is the venue. This year’s Academy will be held at Weston Super Mare, just one more stop down the M5 from Clevedon at junction 21. This makes it convenient for more people, as not only is the motorway very accessible but there are also bus and railway stations in Weston Super Mare. Bristol airport is also very close at hand.
Directions to both the college where the Academy will be held and to accommodation (which is very nearby) are available on request. Because of being held within a college surrounding we would appreciate it if you would also enclose a passport size photograph of yourself so as we can attach it to your name badge.
As usual there will be the same basic structure. This, as some of you will know means lots of lectures, lots of knitting, lots of work, lots of food, lots of fun, but not much sleep! And again we feel it only fair to advise bringing along the headache tablets! The lecturers this year are
: Pat Coulston, Teryl Hollins, Sharne Lott, Sally Hall and Irene Krieger. Again, keeping to the normal structure there will be three groups; two for E6000 and one for Duo. The shop will also be available at all times, this year both the family and George le Warré will be around, in the shop to help with any difficulties you may find or to answer any questions you may have.We have been able to hold the price of the weekend at £175 (Sterling) per person (payable by Friday, 2nd October please). This price includes lunch on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, evening meals on the Friday and Saturday, all tea/ coffee breaks, lecture notes and pens. All that you need bring with you is yourself. Please note however that this price does not include accommodation, which due to individual preferences is left for you to organise
That’s all from us now except to say we very hope that you can join us as we are all looking forward to seeing you.

Caffle European Academy 1998 - Lectures and Lecturers
What would we do without her? Our very own ‘Queen of Passap / Pfaff Correspondence’ is returning once more to extend our understanding of our machines. Those of you who have not met the lady herself will surely have come across her work in her magazine articles and appreciate what an asset she is to us at the Academy; showing us new and exiting things we never knew we could do.
Let’s trim it!
In this class Pat is going to exploit the true versatility of trims in the decoration of garments. Pat will also show us how to do automatic castons making life a whole lot easier.
New pattern designs from old.
With some help from Pat and a little work of those grey cells we are going to take one design and discover how by manipulating needle settings we can turn it into something totally different and unique.
Forget the manual (OX-DX)
Yes, once again we at the Academy are going beyond the book; using settings you may never have used before. Who knows, by next years Academy we may all be using these settings.
Due to popular request - Sally is coming all the way from Michigan to be with us this November. A founder member of our academy, Sally was unable to make it last year due to other work commitments; but now she’s back and on top form to show us all just what we can do with our machines.
Trouser Terrific
If, like me, you are unsure about trousers (knitted or otherwise) then this is the class for you. Sally will show you that when knitted correctly, how flattering and slimming they will look. For either casual or evening wear this class will help you make the most comfortable trousers you have ever had.
No two rows quite the same.
That’s right, Sally is going to knit on the E6000 with a pattern, which rotates every row. This is another class, which makes us push our machines just that little bit further.
Swing time
In this class Sally is going to show an American dress design and how, by knowing all the secrets, it becomes easy to knit and fit.
The all in one
If sewing up is not your favourite pass time and you would much rather be back at your machine knitting then this class will show you how. Sally is going to show Duo knitters how to make up children's and adult’s garments with the minimum of sewing.
Teryl is back! Those of you who came last year will remember Teryl for her wonderful designs and flair for making garments that look truly professional. Joining us from California for the second time Teryl is most well known her ‘Crane Coat’ as featured some time ago in Duet. We are glad to welcome her back and look forward to her sharing with us some more of her vast knowledge of Passap / Pfaff knitting.
Designer techniques
In this talk Teryl is going to take her extensive knowledge of designer garments and show us some of the classic styling techniques used in these patterns and how they are adapted for use on our machines.
Collars, neckbands and buttonbands
As the title of this class suggests Teryl will show how the use of different collars and bands can make the world of difference to your final garment.
Perfect pockets
The range of pockets that can be produced on the Passap / Pfaff machines is wide and varied. In this lecture Teryl will demonstrate a variety of different pockets including those with contrast coloured piping, knit-in and separate pockets for both single and double bed work.
Irene’s work in machine knitting is most well known to people for her contributions to Machine Knitting News over the years. As one of the most renowned European knitters in the UK Irene never fails to amaze us with new techniques and ideas. We welcome her back to the Academy this year and look forward to her insightful and informative classes.
Weaving
Many of us think it is impossible to weave on the European machine. Guess what - you can. The fabric created is not identical to that created on Japanese machines but it is perhaps more versatile; the fabric can be light or heavy weight. Irene will show us the process of weaving and how to make another beautiful fabric.
Experimenting with jacquard settings
There is no doubt that the European Machines can create an incredible range of jacquard fabrics. Irene will show us how changing just one setting can create a completely different fabric, how a difference in yarn can produce completely new textures and how to combine thickness and texture for interesting effects. Say goodbye to ordinary jacquard.
Professional making up of garments
The most important thing in getting a truly professional finish is the putting together. In this class Irene will show us how to achieve a ‘better than shop bought look’; that is, how to stitch a seam so that the pattern matches exactly or sewing on buttons so that they do not distort the buttonhole band and many more hints and tips.
Sally Hall
Due to popular request - Sally is coming all the way from Michigan to be with us this November. A founder member of our academy, Sally was unable to make it last year due to other work commitments; but now she’s back and on top form to show us all just what we can do with our machines.

New for Caffle Academy ‘98.
Since receiving her Bachelor of Arts for Fashion Textiles Sharne has been designing fabrics and garments for industry. Working and preparing colours for use well into the next millennium Sharne is going to give us an insight into how to use these colours in our knitwear and show us how ‘hand felting’ can create dramatic new textures for our knitted garments.Needing no introduction himself, George is here once again. Although not lecturing this year George will still be around, available mainly in the shop area, to try and answer all of your questions and queries. As ‘Technical Advisor’, I’m sure you will agree there is none more qualified to fill this role.
